Ice is just high quality speed. If anyone has taken a half of a gram of speed back in the day then you have had the ice equivalent. The difference is that it isn't cut with whatever so you take a lot less and get fcuked up. It isn't a highly addictive drug unless you have something to run away from.

Ice = Crystal d-N Methamphetamine i.e. usually uncut & also higer purity. Can be smoked or injected & is highly addictive.
Speed = Amphetamine, or D_L-Methamphetamine, usually cut with either glucose, baking soda, or other substances. Usually snorted

True. Users of large amounts of amphetamines over a long period of time can develop an amphetamine psychosis, which is a mental disorder similar to paranoid schizophrenia. The psychosis is manifested by hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia. Bizarre, sometime violent, behavior is exhibited by those with amphetamine psychosis. Symptoms usually disappear within a few weeks after drug use stops.

ie, when you give up ice, your brain is the way it is for the rest of your life. heroin, speed, weed ... your brain will regenerate cells etc, memory & thought will gradually become stronger & sharper and better over time as you distance yourself from it.

Due to ice's stronger purity & longer lasting effects, it affects the dopamine and serotonin neurons in the brain. Long term use may lead to noticeable neurological and behavioral problems.

one of the alarming things about ice was, sometimes your body is burnt out from the constant adrenaline of ice, but you mind remains 1000 miles per hour. This one guy started out doing stuff, cleaning his room, his car and organising shit ... as he kept taking it he no longer had the physical energy to do all this stuff ... so he started cleaning and picking at his teeth with toothpicks. until he eventually dislodged all but three of his (top) teeth.

i can't quite imagine the intensity & persistence required to dislodge teeth with toothpicks over any period of time, let alone the few months it took him to achieve this.

Happy to be corrected but I thought the main cause of amphetamine psychosis was sleep deprivation?
I tried meth a few times years ago and found it quite boring.

Sleep deprivation is one of the causes of psychosis.

If you do stop & start getting back into a proper sleep pattern, most side affects are reversible.

I found that meth had too short a (peak) high and the urge to redose was more apparant, quicker. Also a much sharper (worse) comedown.

Speed for me, had a much more enjoyable journey & there wasn't the urge to redose once the party was over. As long as I had a good sleep Sunday night, I was fine Monday morning.

my understanding of my learning this week was, speed psychosis is (mostly) bought on by sleep deprivation, hence it's a short term effect rather than a permanent effect like ice. where the psychosis from ice is caused from actual brain damage, hence its long term, irreversible effect.

there's a chemical strand of difference from ice to speed. Speed is a "Dexamphetamine" while ice is "Methamphetamine hydrochloride" and its the hydrochloride bit which can cause the hallucinations, delusions and "bizarre" behaviour, and by bizarre, they really mean violent outbursts and super human strength etc ... they were the main points of difference from speed to ice.

Dexamphetamine is used in ADD / ADHD medication like Adderall.

Hydrochloride just means "the salt form" of methamphetamine and is what gives it the crystaline properties e.g. NaOH is the salt version of sodium. There are other forms like Sulfate, Phosphate, Aspartate & Succinate. The hydrochloride form is also the strongest.

You also have chirality that can result in different results for different substances.

* the abc also had a kick arse doco this week about THC levels and skunk/ hydro weed, compared to the good ol' days of the CBD heavier bush weed. just higher instances of psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia and mental illness (bi polar and schizophrenia etc) occurring because CBD actually diffuses THC, and in skunk the process of hydro growing the plant, CBD is no longer photo synthesising (so it's no longer present) in the plant.

CBD is the part of weed, that made you relax, calm and focussed on the most menial of tasks. I wish we could get CBD, it sounds better than a few red wines at the end of the week. haha

on a slightly related note. old shearer still smokes the hooch. and his recent paranoia and loathing about sharks is indicative of weed habits more aligned with the nasty arse skunk, which is 80% more prevalent now than it was a decade ago.

Pot (the plant, not the man made stuff that you used to be able to buy from tobacco shops like "spice") can be 2 strains - Cannabis Sativa, or Cannabis Indica. Sativa is the more energizing / mentally stimulating high, and Indica is the more mellow chilled form.
