Re: Ask Carroll
Good idea braithy, oz surfing is sadly lacking an iconic myth that we can all celebrate, you know, something like Gallipoli, the Ivan Milat murders, Ned Kelly. You've hit gold with this one, the re-enactment will quickly become an annual event I'm sure.

Re: Ask Carroll
Its the sort of thing that smacks (!) of genuine local content and a colourful slice of local history, that the mayor, tourist boards, local government and business associations will be lining up to support; there's a staring role for the police as well (they'll love the chase); mental health authorities, drug dealers, the surf industries. There'll be so many fingers in this pie, it'll be way bigger than Beefweek for sure.
I can just imagine braithy in his dotage being interviewed as the man who first came up with the concept of Chase Week, and who was famously arrested during that first, raw re-enactment, dribbling a little from the corner of his mouth, but with a smug and contented smile on his face, bathing in the obvious adulation of a pretty, young and gushy journalist (Jennifer Byrne's granddaughter)

Who the fcuk am I, Michael Ho or Owl Chapman?Braithy wrote:Nick. It's your esteemed colleague and long time friend here, Craig.
When are you up here next? I was wondering if you'd like to help for an upcoming project i'm thinking about crowd sourcing.
I am sourcing a 1978 ford falcon in order to recreate MP's famous car chase to brisbane. there will of course be hallucinogenic drugs involved, and we will not be stopping – no matter what the pig bastards throw at us – until the Story Bridge, where at this point i envision all kinds of hell to be breaking loose.
as i am striving for as much authenticity as humanly possible our uniform will be shirtless, stubbies and socks and thongs. all you're required to bring are your own vitamin C tablets, i will be supplying the rest.
can i count you in?
actually I thought of writing a movie about MP and Owl's legendary drive to Bells but didn't quite feel I had the right to tell that story at the time. Might have another go.

That could be a real goer: a road trip down the east coast offers scope to engage with pretty much anything you want

A film about MP and Owl's road trip.
But no one would believe it.
Which reminds me of that photo of Owl Chapman at Maalaea. Classic.

Re: Ask Carroll
What a guy! So calm and together he can casually take a piss while slotted on the Maalaea freight train. They don't make 'em like that any more

Sorry, that was completely out of line; akin to disrespecting the prophet... I certainly don't want 1000 lashes for disrespect.Cranked wrote:Ahh! Its all clear to me now, that's why he needed a piss.steve shearer wrote:Foamy the sig below from Owl came from that session.

This movie could be a goer......although you will probably have to swap it to Bondi with the Bondi Hypster Guys as MP and Owl.......with a car chase through the Bondi Junction Mall.
Actually if you did do a road trip movie about MP and Owl you could have the Deathrace 1000 Race to Brisbane as the finale.
I had dinner with his lawyer one time. He said he foolishly got into his passenger seat after the court appearance.

Re: Ask Carroll
Owl is eyesight-impaired.
This movie would not feature Bunker Spreckles. It would be a version of the classic Aussie surf road trip, but one done on the brink of surfing's metamorphosis into what it would become today, a nice lifestyle act for the relatively well-off Australian family, shorn of its danger and social risk.
In the 1970s, trying to get from Coolie to Phillip Island in the great surf month of April, tormented by addiction and the sense that the world was turning against them, these two idiots - gods to a sliver of the population and scum to the rest - lurch from triumph to disaster and back again
It would end with the epic seq where MP comes into view across the field next to Express Point, raincoat on and board in hand...out of the clouds, literally...walks past Bugs without a word, paddles out for his heat, gets absolutely blasted on the first wave, then destroys the place and wins easily.
