Training for Tahiti

Post by steve shearer » Thu Aug 12, 2010 7:49 pm

Preparation has mostly consisted of sleepless nights courtesy of a rambunctious one year old and too much instant coffee, with a few tepid go-outs in 3 ft point surf. And reading Melville.
I know Carroll has been running laps underwater in his sluggoes with a bag of rocks tied to his testicles with 50 pound braid so I don't anticipate winning any paddle battles with him.
I'm now focussed on fast twitch reaction, mostly concerned with paddling and getting to my feet and making the drop.
And creative visualisation: in particular seeing Manoa Drollet calling me into one while Carroll sits on the shoulder then necking a few hinanos later on while Drollet points out the best fa'afafine hang-outs.

But if anyone has any last minute contributions I'd be happy to put them into practice : Lucky Al?

Steve, don't be proud. You're gonna have to do a tow-in or 2.
I'm your man. Take me with you. We'll rustle one up some how. I can handle those babies better than most. Believe me.

Skip there aint enough money in the LHALAS (Lets have a laugh at Shearer) fund to accomodate an entourage..

He'll spend the whole contest following the messiah around asking him how he expects to do a front side/rail grab/air reverse/ finner/rodeo/flip. At 12 foot Chopes..

Still happy I chucked in though!

Lets hope it's better than Revo's Hawaiian trip last year.

Relax! Don't make an issue out of the wave. It's just a surf spot, albeit thick and scary on bigger days. Some days it's a piece of cake.

Tahitian reefs aren't like Indo, they're generally a bit more uneven and swells don't seem to wrap (probably the water's too deep offshore to refract swells). But the waves usually like you to take off at the deepest logical spot. If you're gonna shoulder hop then you gotta really shoulder hop, not go halfway.

The water's warm, nobody cares if you rip or not. Take your time over a few surfs to check it out like you would anywhere else. There's a few other spots nearby including a fun left at a place called No-Pass ('cause it's not really a pass, just a minor reef gap).

Fitness schmitness, bit late to start worrying about that buddy. just bring the right board.

Yeah I was rope-a-doping on the fitness thing: I've been training like a mutha-fcuker....well kinda.

So what would be a recommended 2 and 3 board quiver?

Hey Shearer,
6'5" with volume, some rail edge, fresh wax maybe a new leggie. The BIG issue in Tahooty is getting to the fricken waves. Other than a couple of exceptions that are average waves anyway the bulk of the breaks are a LONG way offshore and a fair drive on land between em.
During the event every boat canoe and floating device that can be propelled by human or machine is rented! I reckon the PERFECT device is one of those plastic kayaks with a big chunk of coral (dead) for an anchor and around 50 feet of rope.
Maybe a quick word to the event organisers and you can cadge a spot on one of the event boats but then your stuck in one place when ringside … Kayak is the go and if you have a little pelican case it will be invaluable to house the leopard skin pen. I would also suggest changing the felt hat for a straw number due to the humidity. Uniform wise something open necked and tropicial maybe see the Stab Style guide :D :D :D
