sorry ... I know it's going to offend all the occ lovers out there but fcuk me this one made me laugh ..."disbalanced" = occys description of a surfer who appears unbalanced ... I mean come on .. if your 9 year old kid used that word you make them write "unbalanced" 200 times... I also have to say I like Luke egan .. bit monotone but has a reasonable grasp of the English language and knows competitive surfing inside out

HAHA a classic Occism just happened...

He was talking about naming his son Jay - "Yeah, he was named J-Bay... I mean he was named Jay which was kind of because of J-Bay...but yeh.."

HAHAH

I dont think he will get it right until Bede snots him. Sean D, can you have a quiet word to him???
And how is it that after all these years with the guy as a team mate, Occy still manages to call him Taj Burrows?

HAHA Another Occism!

A sign came up saying "No Nuke Tyspot" or something like that, and he pronounced nuke "nook". HAHA! God love him, because many people are trying to.

Occy might make some silly comments but at least he sticks it to the judges. Jordy just got an 8.6 for a smaller wave and the Occ let fly!

Maybe he's just too slow to play the game - and THAT's what will eventually see him lose his commentary "job".

Don't knock the industry Fong!!!! It has given Occy a job.. God knows he wouldnt get one anywhere else!

Maybe at Kmart but even that would be a bit challenging for him...

We already tagged Sean (aka John) Holmes as first day man of the match.

His influence on this event cannot be over stated.

His opening rock star gambit shaded GT and bought about an amazing return to flamboyancy from that oft maligned but harmless animal.

I asked yesterday for more flamboyancy from GT, I swear we must have some kind of psychic connect going because his apparel on Day 3 pushed the flamboyancy lever to 11, into dangerous territory. Early 80's LA hair metal is about as far as a sane individual can push it....the next limb to go out on involves transgenderism : if today GT rocks up as a fa'afafine or benchong I will be the first to take my hat off and salute him. He will have taken variety of repertoire to dizzying new heights.

Slater looked tinny and hesitant against Holmes. He thought he could out surf him on the smaller waves, much as he has relentlessly done to the rest of the 44 on numerous ocassions. Holmes just caught the best waves and displayed smooth pointbreak surfing, based around a big carving top turn that matched the waves down the line speed and positioned him for the next section.
He did the same against AI. Two world champ scalps in one day....for a bloke who looked like he's just come out of an audition for a Spandau Ballet tribute band. That is a great day for Pro Surfing and proves what many people have suspected for along time. To wit:
On any given day the best surfers at your local break are not only matching but exceeding the performance level of the best of the 44.

Dane was patchy in his heats. I've come to realise that every one who has guzzled on the Reynolds Kool-Aid ( which is myself, every surf journo under 50 and the entire judging panel) sees not the man and the reality of his performances but a kind of psychological montage ( an interior movie if you like) of his best performances. Their (my) minds are so saturated with these images of a new surfing perfection and the desire to witness more of it they will overlook many mistakes to achieve that goal.
This is wholly understandable.

Jordy continues. Taj continues. They look the goods.

In the box Louie has taken a turn for the worse. I suspect foul play. Professional sabotage. The obvious culprit is Snips. It would be too easy for Snips to lace his biltong with some animal tranquilizer to make his chief rival look bad.
We will watch and prepare for the authorities to get involved.
