I reckon that looked pretty cool.

But it must be pretty damn hard to surf like that, well beyond my paltry abilities

Whatever floats his boat...

I remember Derek out at 8ft Winki during the comp one year. He was taking the drop feet together like a downhill skier, charging down the line in full race crouch., hands together extended in front.

Always different, a bit out-there. He was a 360 king even with fins.

It is amazing that he can avoid going sideways at choice times, like a driving bottom-turn. I call that skill.

But I reckon he has to create drag somehow, with the slotted bottoms, or those long rail lines, to force the nose to fall down the line before the tail and go forward. Otherwise it'd all be spinning, like a skiffleboard.

Maybe a spring-loaded retractable fin for hold if he wants to do a carving cutback instead of another dizzying spin...

i can not recall ever seeing anyone ever do a manouver at absolute full speed like that before!

He must feel like hes fcuking flying
Its a shame the 360 is the only option.
also not being able to sit a bit higher in the barrel seems to be an issue.

but that is serious speed.

There's a photo of the underside of that board in one of the surf mags.
More channels than foxtel.

Wow, I love that.

Hynd at J-Bay. Just like that bit in Litmus. Blows my mind.

I dig the sideways drift up high, how fun does that look!

Its stupid at this level.
Could be interesting 10 years down the track though...different rails, bottom curves, tails with fins built into the planks.
spinning out of control on waves is nearly as dumb as drop knee on a lid

not exactly new stuff, people have been surfing finless for a while.
Chris Won/Taloa surfed bodyboards standup, if in a very lame way:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwPThVpWBQ4

even if DH is surfing better (and he'd want to be, a bodyboard on a pus wave compared to fibreglass at J-bay), it's still so easy to see the limitations.

hats off to him for being able to control it, but if I wanted to stay that low and avoid the barrel I'd probably get on a surfski.

I think Jack Mcoy should make a feature film on Derek and his alternative approach, might keep the both of them relevant for another few years.

My knees are creaking and my head is dizzy just at the thought of it...

I was reading that he enjoys going back to the start again with finless surfing, making it all new, hard, fresh, and all about enjoying going really really fast.

Imagine a board with that kind of trim speed, but the grip to be able to do turns. That would be fun! Like tearing around an empty car-park in a Ferrari!

It seems having one eye hasn't hindered his surfing over the years.
