seals freak me out in the surf!
not because of what they eat, but because of what eats them..

they don't get out of the way when you ride towards them, just stick up their big dopey-looking head and blink at you as they ruin your wave. kind of like bondi most mornings...
saw a group of teenagers messing with one when surfing in la jolla, daring each other to jump onto it's back.
sure enough, one bloke did, then was surprised  when it cracked the shlts, swung around and bit a hole the size of a golfball out of his arse. through a 4-3 wetsuit :!:

 That's exactly what I thought when I read your post - you named her after Patrick Swayze. I tried to be tactful though .

Be careful, Point Break is a cult classic. It might hang around longer than you think . Probably not for her generation though.
Nah-she named after a tree (so are my other 2 daughters) and it's a contraction of Bodhisattva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodhi_Tree)-very fitting for her personality.

The very tree that the buddha was sitting under when he attained enlightenment?

Tellllllll me, grey seal.

excuse the puurri like cryptic posting that means very little and can only serve to annoy.

For those who don't know, grey seal is a song from 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and this thread reminded me of it, and I'm singing it in my head now

The only seal on the nthn beaches i've seen was between Box Head and the Joey from my boat. It was pretty much dusk and the thing came right up to the back of the boat, probably looking for a free feed. From memory it was around June or July - water definately wasn't warm like it is at the moment.
I always thought seals were cold water critters?

I shared a surf with a strange shaped object ( in that it kept changing shape) as it moved towards me at Dalmeny.
It didn't move like anything I had ever seen in the water. It was black and big :?: I was fearfully fascinated. Eventually it move close enough for me to see it was a full sized sea lion (bigger than seals ) that wasn't full sized anymore it had been bitten in half.
I had and obeyed a very sudden urge to visit dry land again so I did
Realised that there had been only one bite to the former sea lion.
Jaffa, I'm opinionated, and I'm sometimes right. So?

Would you bet on that? or do you have insider knowledge with a seal of approval.
I don't surf well when I get nervous

Other than the fact that it left it half eaten? No.

90% of my surfing is done totally alone with no one else in the water or on the beach.

Still get the jitters and the occasional 'panic paddle' ... and I fcuking hate it.

I watched that Sharkwater doco and a story on whites shown on Catalyst that Coops posted a link to on Friday over the weekend.

Amazed to say it but I'll never freak out about sharks again.

I'll always be mindful ... but never scared of what's underneath me anymore.

Unless of course there's one gnawing off my leg

fishing off the box head, the 45 minute walk right at the head land box head I've smelt and seen a big arse seal, thought it might reside at lion island ? I've also seen one on the beach at curly many years ago.

Having written smelt, it begs the question didn't you smell something? cause they are stinky fellas.
If it's well engineered it's beautiful .

had the same thing happen to me on albacore off jervis bay. the bloody things were about 5ks offshore loping through the waves, and every time we hooked something over about 5lbs they would smash it.
wouldn't touch the smaller ones, don't know why. the charter bloke we were fishing with reckoned the best fight he ever had was from a bull seal that nabbed a decent yellowfin and wouldn't let go

I think that's where my half seal came from.

They stink in life, they stink in death,
and you haven't smelt a smell
til you've smelt whale breathe.
One whiff of that could really kill,
you'd smell like that if you ate just krill.
So you won't be quick to take it to heart,
consider the stench of a humpback fart.
The sea erupts with an oily sheen
those nearby become MrGreen!
