prosurfers that give back to locals

Post by oldfella » Fri Feb 05, 2010 1:11 pm

waiting for my bus this morning i saw tom whittaker running down to tama like a grommet with a big smile on his face. he is a great bloke, always seems to take time to help the groms at bronte when he is around. is that the norm. with the other WCT guys when they are back?

No, most of them don't have enough soul. They're all too commercial, packaged products, you know, not human at all.

I remember Barton Lynch was always really great with all of us when we were groms - giving us waves, calling grubs into sets. It's the little things.

Things have changed since occys era.. Pro Surfers these days are definitly alot more professional and willing to give back to the community, look at julian wilson with his breast cancer donations, or taj, parko and the rest with there grom comps and so on, also think about how much grommet abuse has stopped, i think the guys these days would rather take a grom for a surf rather than tie the kid to a pole or something stupid. The call about surfers losing there soul, is probably the most overused comment used by 50+year old surfers today, mate go with the times, surfing is bigger and better than ever and its exciting to see the change, I think surfers still have the soul and passion to do it... otherwise they wouldnt

I asked that question and I'm 36.

Don't disagree that it's bigger than ever, just a lot more surf fashion, cool kids and marketing of the surfing image nowdays in my opinion.

To me it's soul less because it's not about the act, it's about profit.

Also, most of the guys who are giving back via grom comps and the like are not really willingly giving, they're meeting sponno comittments. In my opinion.

Joel rather be at home with Monica and the kids or over in WA hosting a grom comp?

Nothing wrong with that, just don't feed me shit and ask me if it tastes like mango.

Besides, grom comps aren't really giving back to the locals are they.

There are pro's who do, just don't think we'd get to read about it usually.

I've seen Layne out in the water at Freshie chatting with and encouraging the grommets, calling them onto waves and swapping boards. Basically just one of the crowd and a truly decent person.
Plus she also set up her own branded surf event.

I've seen Mick Fanning and Jay Thompson burn locals and take all the sets while towing into a crowded lineup at 4ft supertubes over here.

Yeah woo pro surfers

i reckon grom comps are great why when i was a grom i went in one and won a billabong shirt and i've worn billabong ever since even when i've had to sew the patch on.

shane powell has his own surf school... err... thanks :?
no really, it's given a couple of local guys a part time job as well as unleashing the tourist soft boarders into the impact zone, just at the end of the point.

last year seen RCJ encouraging his son at N.Avoca...

Peter Drouyn was always "chatty" with us as kids! At his shop he was always willing to check fittings on ya boardies when trying them on

Carwyn Williams is the only proper pro from round these parts and he fcuked off to live in France 20 years ago. Pretty altruistic I reckon

To tell the truth eggs are one thing I avoid buying when I’m grocery shopping. So you may say I’m an intermittent egg buyer who usually lets someone else buy them.
