ffs

some people love surfing a whole lot more than others. if you truly love something, you live it. think it, breathe it. call out it's name instead of yer wife's. lawd. same as some men love their wives more than others (and some men love other mens wives more than their own.)

is there any point in discussing this?

where's the wub? *sniff*

Tiny insy bit rich coming from you SnT, seeing as you've built a career hanging shitt on those lower down the pecking order than you. Especially those dabblers with an enriched sense of entitlement and not much respect for the established hierarchy. Hope you show the same amount of respect and goodwill to the next bunch of kooks who paddle out on top of you.

I am listening to the notions of others, particularly Hatchies.
We're having a robust discussion about it, that is enlarging both our points of view.

Its different things for different people, thats for sure. For most, especially in the city, it's exactly as Deesee described. A bit of fun, bit of release.
Nothing more.

For others it means something more.
Fcuking hell, go read a book on mountaineering and see how people feel when they've climbed Mt Everest.
I can't imagine how it must feel to get spat out of a monster Tube at Chopes : that experience is on an entirely different level to mine. I can only imagine the training, dedication, experience and phenomenon must shatter your whole pysche.
Bit different to having a splash and giggle with your mates on the weekend.

So why are you offended about not being part of the true soul surfer clan.
Had thought the same thing earlier myself Olds, just thought better of posting it.

I'm sure it will be received a lot better coming from you

Is this the end of the world as we know it?????? Discusss

Dutch finally ban bestiality

Posted 1 hour 33 minutes ago

The internet will potentially lose one of its main sources of bestiality videos under a ban approved by the upper house of the Dutch Parliament.

The new law bans human sex with animals, including in private situations where the animals are not injured, a summary of the law posted on the upper chamber's website said.

Sex with animals had been legal in the Netherlands, as long as it could be proven the animals were not injured.

The law also prohibits the production or distribution of animal pornography.

Given the illicit nature of the product, precise figures on animal pornography video sales are difficult to find.

The Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad found in a 2007 survey that distributors in the Netherlands were responsible for some 80 per cent of bestiality videos worldwide.

The bill was introduced in April 2007 and passed the lower house in July 2008, but took time to make its way through the upper house to final approval. It was not immediately clear how soon the law would go into effect.

steve, you don't know me and have never surfed with me ... some people on RS have and know how I behave in the surf and towards others so I don't need to respond to your suggestions about my character ...

you are a very condecending soul shearer ...

Well fcuken oddly enough, the times I've felt most in tune with surfing in super heavy surf with packs of other surfers who're seemingly similarly in tune, it has felt amazingly like that splash'n'giggle thing! Except with massive jolts of adrenaline scattered through it.

I don't know if that's true for everyone but it's been that way for me.

btw I did wonder if surfing's "soul" might mean are people emotionally involved and connected with it, and with others as a result of it, then this thread is pretty good evidence for its continued existence.

If someone was defined as a soul surfer, i'd assume that they would make the majority of their life decisions based on surfing (of course family would come first - family you love that is). Housing, job, spare time allocation, holidays etc. I would also expect a pretty high skill level as well.
Passionate and dedicated surfers may not quite tick all those boxes. Religion is the same - only a few will truly devote themselves, but there are alot of passionate and dedicated followers.
If it feels good, do it.

Well that's not my intention mate.
I was responding to your fairly aggro post where you accused me of hanging shit on people who didn't subscribe to my point of view, showing no respect and other "character" assasinations.

So far, whilst trying to make the point that surfing, like almost all worthwhile or meaningless pursuits that bring some kind of soul joy or satisfaction to a human being, exists on a spectrum with fully committed and devoted individuals getting the most of out it and being the most in tune, I been accused of having no self worth, showing no respect , hanging shit on people who don't agree with me etc etc.

I realise what I am saying is a bitter pill to swallow for some, or sounds harsh and undemocratic but it's really not that radical a notion.
People don't like their little self centred existences being somehow undermined by this radical notion that their not at the top of the tree.
Fcuk knows why?
Ego?
Their identity somehow under attack?

Maybe because I said the word mediocrity and that strikes a chord of terror in the middle class heart.

Don't know why your taking offence though SnT....I'm right there with you scrabbling to get a few go-outs in between school runs, bus driving, forecasting, lawnmowing etc etc.
I pay my taxes and contribute.
I'm not one of these drug smoking drop-outs you despise (or is it envy) so much.

Are you able to tell the distinct difference between the proficiency and frequency in performing the act.

Versus the act of loving performing the act irrespective of the proficiency or frequency?

They are mutually exclusive, at least I believe them to be, as neither can be used to quantify or measure against the other.

That is the point.
That is a very good question.

Seriously, I don't know but from what I've seen Greenough and Brocky surf more than anyone I know and they are proficient and they are more stoked than anyone I know.

I worked in surf schools and learn to surf camps for ten years......I saw literally thousands of people come into contact with surfing, mostly for the first time, some as part-time intermediates.
Did they enjoy it, love it , receive some kind of soul-deep satisfaction from it?
Perhaps they did, at the time, but I'd say 99percent of them went back to their jobs in the cities and just continued to surf very infrequently.
Now are they as stoked as Greenough, who every day has some kind of adventure on the ocean, who''ll mat ride the worst kind of onshore junk or sit way outside the Cape in super sharky waters; who has experienced the thrill of riding 10 foot Lennox at dawn with a camera on his back recording deep tube rides?
Somehow I doubt it.

So to answer your question I would say that greater proficiency and frequency in performing the act enhances the love of performing the act because it expands and deepens that connection.
Does a bloke who only sees his kids once a year have the same connection as a Dad who is with them daily?
They are mutually reinforcing in my opinion ......others will think diffrently.

christ steve ...it's the way you say it ... again suggesting that "it's a bitter pill to swallow" ... and I thought my life was going pretty well till you showed up and told me otherwise ... I just think there is more to life that what's in your head ...

I may envy some people a little , yes ... I don't despise people I don't know ... and I only despise those who treat others poorly ... I don't care less who sucks down bongs or drops out or works or surfs, I'm too busy worrying about my own families life ... and I don't even know where the top of the tree is so you can stick that comment in your character assasination ... the top of the tree may be money, it may be happiness, it may be lifestyle , but I know as much about that as the next bloke ... very little

anyway one day when you get a chance ... give up shaving for a month , put on your draw string hemp pants and a moo moo, grab a big bag off gunja and some lentils, head for sydney in your bongo van ... then I will happily meet up for a surf with you and you can assess and pass judgement on my soul surf rating first hand ...
