My sympathies to those who know anyone lost in either of these 2 disasters.

Let's hope that the old saying about 3's doesn't hold true at the moment.

Just returned form Padang on Saturday. Very very sad indeed

My hopes and prayers go out to the people of the city and affected areas surrounding Padang and I hope the family and crew of Arimbi are all safe and well

Also my thoughts go out to the people affected in the Pacific Tsunami.

More bad news. What a dynamic world we live in.

Thoughts and Prayers for all those involved including the authorities helping to rescue... hope you gain extra fight in you to get through the rubble to the unfortunate ones.

There is mention that the volcanoes of sumatra may come to life, lets hope they decide to stay dormant

Ok i'm starting to think my brother has pissed off people in high places.

First Samoa (we were there last year) and now Padang (he was there last month).

Talking up the death toll to over a thousand....not good

jeez these quakes have got to be linked or related.

Reports are that both the Ambacang and the Bumiminang hotels in Padang have collapsed. For those of you who have ever over-nighted in Padang that's where you would most likely have stayed.

I stayed in the Bumiminang last year but was warned it wasn't safe after it was weakened by the 2004 Aceh quake (they just painted over the cracks). So this year I stayed in the Ambacang, it looks like it wouldn't have made a difference....

Heard similar reports here. Bit of a shock after only being there (Bumiminang) on the weekend and talking to a few of the staff. Pretty flash hotel as well, didn't know about the painted over cracks though Hopefully they all got out OK..

Tragic events for all those involved directly ot indirectly .

And tragic for my surfing trip . Was supposed to head there in 5 days time .......not sure if that will be even possible now :?

They're related, they are both on the edges of the Australian plate the light orange one, near Samoa and Tonga and all the way down through NZ the pacific plate is pushing under the Australian one, in Indo the Australian one is pushing under the Indian and Eurasian plates creating and shaking the whole Indo chain.
So if the Pacific Plate does a big bump and sets the whole plate ringing like a bell then the next weak place will let go.
By the way the day before the Boxing Day tsunami there was a huge but unmentioned quake at Macquarie island on the southern edge of the Australian plate and then bang Indo 2004.
Watch over the next few years or maybe a decade as the Indonesian chain does it bit by down the line and across New Guinea.
Do you need to worry, NO you'd be dead unlucky to coincide with a quake.
Do your bit to help with aid and then when all is recovered enough go for a trip to Indo or Samoa, one that puts most of your tourist dollar in the hands of locals.
Watch and help surf aid do their stuff, local on ground knowledge
Rotary International often sends teams to situations like this under a program called RAWCS check with your local Rotary club they also gather tools to send too, as the locals have lost everything so this helps them rebuild even if you can't go yourself.

Just wondering if anyone has heard how the Nias area faired? I have a mate over there at the moment and haven't heard anything from him.
