From the Australian Article : "On the new tour, no ride will be rated a 10 unless it includes an aerial manouvre"

Thats pretty stupid, so a kegging deep Teuaphoo, wrestle the foam ball pit, mutiple Jbay barrells linked with flow and carves or a late drop, pull in, blown out by the spray 12 foot Pipe will not not be a 10 because there was no bunny hop

We'll see, obviously KS will be on it, who will be the other 7 permanent surfers? Would have to a mix of nationalities to keep the interest world wide? Does a brazilian (Adrain De Souza) make it?

Yeah good point Podge, I will be very interested to see what waves they choose for the tour. They are saying 8 events - May to September, so no Hawaiian event? Mostly southern hemisphere waves?

May - Shipwreck Bay, New Zealand

June - Margaret River, Australia

June - J-Bay, South Africa

July - Hollow Trees, Indonesia

July - Sultans, The Maldives

August - Cloudbreak, Fiji

August - Padang Padang, Indonesia

September - Blacks, Cali USA

Some doubtful locations there Longy... Shipwrecks's in May & Margaret River in June would both likely be plagued with howling sou-westers for most of those months. It would be interesting to see how a tv network with deadlines would handle waiting periods and sub standard waves if forced to run in less than prime conditions.

Margs in June=too risky

Would need to look earlier- late April/May- as you know Ads swell is not the problem its the winds.

Not even sure whether Margs is a blue ribbon connest venue, its an awesome wave but its not a spectactular ala Padang, Teauphoo or Jbay wave. And for this thing to work it will need the spectacular.

Yeah, and that's going to be something new for ESPN - how many NFL games have been called off due to crappy winds?

Margs, hmm at least it wouldn't be flat I guess. I have never seen Margs breaking worse than that crap they ran the contest in at Santa Catarina though.

Maybe North Point? shhhhhhhhh 8)

From what I have read Steve the deal is scheduled programmes on ESPN 2 - so highlight packages with a standardised live broadcast via the ESPN sit - so not bouncing from sponsor site to site every event like the ASP telecast does.

From memory last time I tried to watch something on the ESPN site (Bejing Olympics) you had to have a paid subscription. Not sure how well that's going to catch on

I reckon this is a lay down misere for ESPN : it's a concept that's been waiting to happen for ages.
The ASP has almost got the formula right with the Dream Tour but it's time the squeaky clean "Freeride" image was dumped.
Bugs knows this himself in his heart of hearts....people want controversy, drama, good and bad guys, rivalry and redemption.

Pro surfing is only interesting to people in heavy waves with known personalities and rivalries.
It's a simple formula that the ASP has been dancing on the edge of for the last 10 years.......the Slater/Irons era will go down as the great lost opportunity for the ASP....that was something that Ma and Pa in whitebread America could relate to.

They don't want squeaky clean robots with rehearsed niceties: they want drug addled surfers, pushing their limits in and out of the water and showing this incredible life to the millions of work-a-daddy's stuck in office cubicles or driving home in peak hour traffic to their sixpacks and plasma screens.
This would be an easy sell.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong but they would have to screw it up Big-time for this not to be very entertaining viewing.

geez, so many things to talk about:

As bad as many think current comentary is, its hard to see professional comentators do anything but turn the commentary into some cheeseball spinoff of basketball / baseball / gridiron comentory. Cant see many Aussie comentators being used for a deal aimed predominantly at the American Market. I can just see "Slater chasing a 9.8 at the bottom of the 4th".

And how would you choose a top 8. Surely there would have to be some sort of feeder tour in order for a top 8 to be selected. COuldt just be at the organisers discression.

And do you think Slater would have launched into this now if he was still in the running for the title? I think not.

Could be a good thing but I reacon best bet is for ASP to find a way to roll current Dream TOur into this one otherwise it will be an ugly few years until one of the tours dies a slow death - probably ASP.

Speaking of drug addled, is there any drug testing on the ASP tour? Are any of the pro's tested as they would be in the Tour de France or other professional sporting comp? Maybe no-one gives a rat's?

What drugs could you take to performance enhance pro-surfing? A couple of cones before a heat at J-Bay? :?:
