North Shore Hawaii accom.
Hey guys,
this is aimed at anyone who has been to the north shore recently enough to know any cheap(ish) accommodation.
Im heading over in the peak (december), and i was originally staying with a mate over there, but things have changed around a bit, and I'm now staying solo (he'll still be there, but staying with his fam).
Does anyone know of any relatively cheap accommodation on the North Shore? Sort of on the main stretch, i.e. Pipe - Sunset stretch?
I was looking at a place in Halewia, and my friend tells me its a little bit out of the way for someone who wouldn't be driving. I have spoken to Mooney about it, and he said he would speak to a friend, but he has other things to do, so i thought i would ask here.
Anyone have any advice? NC? The older crew?
Ringmaster, have you been?
I reckon it will be awesome, my first solo overseas trip. I'll have people over there that i know, but it should be great. Budget is all under control, I'm currently saving, selling boards and what not. Parents are putting a bit in, and hopefully some other sources...
Started training for it, so that's all set.
Just need accommodation advice. I have booked the flights etc....
cheers guys.

Yeah give Halewia a miss... to far away, unless u have a car
I have spent 5 seasons over there and i have stayed..... from memery (2 or 3 times ??) at a place called Backpackers. Its right next to Waimea Bay and right across the road from 3 tables beach. Its owned and run by the Foo Family, nice people. You rememebr the late Mark Foo who passed away some while back (94) surfing mavericks ?? anyway its close to all the good places. Foodland is just down the road. And its only a short bike ride to all the good breaks etc.
Book ahead of time as u will be going in peak season and all the accomodation will get taken up quickly and u will have a better choice of places etc.... website is below

Hey G....the backpackers is a good deal.
Foo also has another house on the other side of Waimea Bay that is good if you have a few mates.
Otherwise, buying a shitty rustbucket and living in it is a good way to survive on the cheap.
Just make sure it's waterproof and you go to sleep with a machete by your side.
Don't take boards.
Boards are cheap and good there.

It's a busy time G but also epic time. Sheep is right Backpackers is the go for a couple nights then there is a notice board at Foodland (get a Makai card first shop it will save ya heaps)where you can pick up a room in a share house, can be kinda shady though as you get ALL types on the North Shore kind of like a haven for the "Touched", grab a second hand pushy (around 30-60 bucks) from the shop across from Foodland (when it's open) and they will buy it back when your done and your away. Keep an eye on the banks at Log Cabins for a sly uncrowded surf if your there early but once the sand moves off the reef steer clear of the joint. Arvo beers on the beach are an institution but put ya empties in the bin. Don't be scared of the local crew, say G'day have a big smile and lots of respect and you may even find the "Aloha" they talk about.
Make sure you spend one Friday night in town probably with an arvo surf on a hire mal at Queens to kick things off (get a room though cause getting back to the NS is expensive and difficult when your blind and it's 3 in the AM.
Don't worry about the car mate parking is a fricken nightmare and ALL the spots are a pushy ride away and the bike path is FULL of good looking chicks. Watch the funny smelling ciggies they are REAl strong. You will have a ball.
Get ya boards there no excess and the local boards go best and there are SHIT loads of second handies at the shops in Halewia.

Yeah, my friend Dom smacked his head on the reef pretty hard last season, or the one before
Heard about the pushys, that looks the go.
I think i'm going to take like 3 boards over, get some shots for my shaper, and ill buy boards for proper waves when i am there. I might just take my standard boards, but get my shaper to make them a bit bigger and for better waves (he knows what he's doing ).
But i am pretty bloody excited, i just need to get a job again and get a bit of extra money coming in again. I have a lump sum, and the olds are putting a bit in, and then if i can save about $500 for extra stuff like the bike and food, i should be set. Ill sell a few boards before i go too...
I'll have a mate over there, so i think i'll be scabbing a meal or two off him

Re: North Shore Hawaii accom.
What i want to know is how fcken difficult is it going to be to get waves over there.
I can imagine myself paddling out at some fun sized pipe, sitting there for hours waiting and waiting and pretty much paddling back in :?
With the amount of hassling and dog eat dog shit going on, along with what id imagine being an entire food chain of surfers out there which id be at the bottom of is it even worth paddling out pipe? Is it constantly packed? Is there such thing as a sneaky session considering so many people will be able to see the surf from their balcony?

ha ha go gumby, have fun, Backpackers is good.
for christ's sake don't go on the bike path before 7:30 am or Peel will run you over with his helmet cam thing.
for sg and rev, there are many surfing options other than pipeline; if you want to surf pipe in December then you had better live right there on the sand and watch it like a hawk all day every day for the 15-20 minute slices when only 30 people are out as opposed to 60+.
and be willing to deal with the fact that the 30 people who are out are all in the top 45 or the pipeline posse.
Alternatively go surf the 100 or so other spots on the nth shore which are good when fun sized Pipe is good.
sg re swimming in on big days, all you gotta do is look at it and you'll know if you should be out there or not. Getting in is usually pretty easy, it's the catching waves that's hard.

Next season I am going to look for somewhere between laniakea and waimea. There are so many good waves in this stretch and crowds are much mellower. Some of the waves at Jockos - you dont need to be at pipe!

Re: North Shore Hawaii accom.
Stayed @ that Backpackers a coupla times. Played chess every night with a German bloke (in his late 50’s/didn’t surf) and his blond haired mate that looked like a 70’s porno star.
Used to watch UFC fights with the manager cause he was also into it.
When we where there the last time some f-ck up backpacker decided it was a good idea to shit every where.
There was shit in the draws . There was shit in the bath tubs (in the room down stairs) and shit in the kitchen.
I shit you not .
This is no word of a lie.
The whole place was turned into a dunny from hell.
Apparently he got the shits figuratively speaking cause they over charged him or something for the shitty small room up stairs.
So he made up his mind he was going to cr-p every where. So the prick took dumps all night ..all over the place. Must have saved it.
Anyways there are millions of places to surf from Waimea all the way to Halewia without the crowds that Rock Piles to Sunset and beyond attract.

Re: North Shore Hawaii accom.
I'd stayed at Backyards , same street where Jeff Bushman lives and it was great.....path way down to the beach.....need a bike , car better to get around but everyone should do it once. It's a heavy place the North Shore. Not just the waves ...... but after that ..... most other places seem somewhat less initimating. So go , live it and enjoy it.
Train hard though.
