Collateral damage eh Coops?
Anyone at Bondi staying out of the water?
Seems there was only 1 person out at 6 am this morning.

Wooloomoloo attack - 7am; Bondi attack - after sunset; Ballina fatal attack - overcast day.
Common theme = poor visibility = likely mistaken identity.
The best avoidance methods should be obvious.

I remember as a teenager the first time I surfed Angourie. It was 3-5ft, rainy, dark, lots of bait fish splashing around, birds diving, trawlers going past. I got chatting to an older local and asked him "So, see many sharks about?". He gave me a look, chuckled and said "You're in the ocean. Get used to it."

Still, that was the Nth Coast and this is Bondi

Also had Eckmen effect in full swing last week bringing heaps of nutrients to the beaches  and heaps of bait fish, now it's raining dumping more nutrients from our streets, golf course and farms :?

Why are there so many sharks now  I think it's directly related to the purchasing of commercial licenses from NSW fishing licenses fees, which has led to a lot more bait fish and hence more salmon and hence more sharks.

And I'd guess they'd all be bull sharks :!:

p.s there was a horse attacked by a shark in balmain, I'll have to ask me sis when it was :?: ( like 10-20 years ago but what kind of shark attacks a horse :? )
If it's well engineered it's beautiful .

google "devotees" and you'll see this guy will be questioning why he didn't do it earlier.

'Mistaken identity'? I don't actually think the shark gives a f*ck whether he's about to bite a fish or a surfer somehow.

Shit, sorry mate, I thought you were a walrus. Here's your arm back. Won't happen again.

Well yeah they do actually.

In general, sharks vastly prefer their natural prey, ie fish and other smaller sea creatures, and humans ain't it. Numerous experiments have shown this to be the case.

There are exceptions. Big tiger sharks will pretty much eat anything they see, food or not. Large great white sharks have been shown to selectively attack dummy humans on surfboards, apparently believing them to be seals (the underwater profile is fairly similar).

Sharks generally really don't like getting involved with anything that fights back (ie a Navy diver) or anything that's bigger than they first assumed (ie a 35-year-old bodyboarder at Bondi whose hand they've grabbed).

btw while sharks have good eyesight, they don't necessarily have to rely on it to guide them -- maybe the dusk/dawn visibility factor has as much to do with us not seeing them.

The poor vis. theory doesn't quite correlate with alot of evidence.
Ballina attack happened about 8.30, right on high tide, water was clear at the time. Vis was good.
Fingal attack happened about the same time. Vis was good.
Good vis. sure makes you feel better though.
Nothing like surfing a north coast river mouth during flood when the mullet are running.
You can smell shark.

I don't think 'mistaken identity' and poor visibility applies when it comes to Bull Sharks. Male Bulls have the highest testosterone levels, more than any other animal. The shark doesn't want to eat you, it's pissed off and you are in it's territory.

Same thing as when you enter a back yard with a Pit Bull, that terrier isn't hungry!

I've seen videos of Bull Sharks attacking outboard motors over and over again like it's gone beserk.
The wave at Curl Curl is so good they had to name it twice

yeah i dunno....certainly early surfs and late surfs need be totally avoided

it's interesting too me

sharks are common in australia

but this year...somethings on

i've never seen so many sharks, so often, and so close shore looking for a feed

just like other fish species....prehaps there just schooling up :?

people need be aware thu....shark attacks are going be a direct result of more these killers in the shorebreak :|

That bloke that got attacked was one of my best mates and has been surfing all his life. He's currently in a bit of trouble with his left hand (as it says in the SMH) but his parents have asked for privacy so although tempted I will leave it at that for now.

:(
