Living in Lakemba and loving it..

moving from the ESBs I’ve effectively more-than-halved the cost of living. Great food and grocery shopping. Vibrant family oriented community and mix of cultures and people.

Much better local infrastructure, ammenities, public transport, and access to main motorways. Only 10 mins west of the airport, Still relatively close to the city (to central by train in 27mins). Closer to Cronulla, royal national park, and south coast. All the spots I predominantly surf anyway.

Only single downside vs. ESBs is the extra 15 mins drive if felt in the mood to go surf a crowded semi closeout. Still surfing 3 days a week on average (instead of 4-5 before) and lift weights on the other days.

Oh fk it. Just tell us what you thought of the waves and the comp would ya.
OK! It's not over yet so there's that.

I reckon there is an enormous amount of uncertainty among the pros right now. They do not know what the future has in store. The WSL's plans are somewhat of a mystery to them. They are kinda "OK whatever" but it affects their levels of commitment, whether they are fully aware of it or not. The older guys, the guys in Mick's freight train, are just not fully engaged right now and are surfing up and down heats. The world champ, JJF, has gone to sleep as a competitor and may well take a while to fully wake up; he is not gonna do it on anyone else's time and if he thinks West Oz is gonna wake him up, I suspect he will be sadly mistaken -- lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice. Since many of the younger pros take their cue from the world champ, they too are sorta vagueing out. The non vague ones include Michel, Ace (gone now), Italo (fcuken ripping), and Gabriel (doesn't give a shit).

Gabriel believes he should be world champ again and I would put some money on it if I were you.

Meanwhile the Mick Narrative charges on apace, for many of the surfers he is now the world champ emeritus and they sense he is the real story of the event. I talked with O who is his next opponent, I might save that conversation for elsewhere but while I reckon O can easily account for Mick, I am not sure if he can bring himself to do it. The power of a storyline can be devastating especially if you believe it.

The chicks are blowing up, they are to a chick total fans of the WSL because it has afforded them a fair go, hurray! Watch there semi with Steph and Caroline Marks, see if a 16 year old Floridian can expose the best surfer in the world with her emotional frailty under heat pressure or if Snake really is this event's super coach.

I surfed Bells this arvo, swell was definitely rising, I would say tomorrow will be very good.

OK. I've not tried this site before but it seems pretty easy to use.
Think someone else on here might use it.

But what about the scale? You didn’t mention the scale. The commentators constantly talk about the scale. The other surf writers talk about the scale. The surfers talk about the scale. Scale.

I dunno Nick. JJF has always struck me as having next to no competitive nous which, when combined with the average and unthreatening waves you get in the first two comps of the year, effectively neuters his most potent weapon - a vastly superior skillset in technical, frightening surf. As to the rest of it, well surely the welcome depowering of safety railwork is playing a large role in the uncertainty. Jordy's interview after losing to Wide Carmichael, for example, was plangent with the baffled entitlement of a man whose formerly celebrated surfing by numbers had turned to shit overnight

Thanks Nick.

The most enjoyable heat I've seen to date was a Tatinana WW heat.

Parko in his post heat interview seemed ambivalent about the tour, even Micks farewell to a degree, although I'm sure this was just his laidback elder statesmen demeanour seeping out.

Owen Wright is one of my favourites but he's so nice he's almost enigmatic. Him and the rest of the family talk a lot but don't give much away, there's an interesting and possibly not so rosy story in there....somewhere. But now I'm just making shit up.

Fcuk the scale. It's still 0-10. They're just making it harder to get to 9. So they fcuken should. The alternative is to change the entire scoring system.

Ah they can adapt to that stuff. Plenty of surfers embracing the seemingly harsher scoring regime.

Re JJF, well he has had two world championships in a row along with an Eddie win, it does seem a little bit facile to say he has next to no competitive nous. I think maybe he has just come to the end of his first period of dominance of the scene. It happens to all of 'em. It is a measure of the surfer how her she responds to that. I wonder if there is a chance John will opt out at this point? I think it is a slim chance, and that competition actually has its claws in him right now, and he won't be able to resist it.

I have a slightly unusual take on his heat with Zeke that I will save for another place, it's more of a challenge for him than it appears.

I'm with GST on this. JJF needs some critical waves. The old guys are on their way out and this is Micks fairwell after all. Brazilians have the fire in the belly.

No. I took the photo though after I got out of the water. It's a few years old now. One of those perfect days at my local.
