Fitbits etc provide the same illusion of competence to the amateur runner as multiboard quivers and a-finset-for-every-occasion do for the low intermediate surfer

I know a middle-aged woman who was unfit and fat and has now run 10 marathons. She says it was because she started wearing a stupid fitbit. It does work for some people in her situation who don't exercise at all and then just, out of curiosity, want to watch their fitbit move and then get a bit hooked.

Thanks. My HRM is extremely useful as a metric of effort.
i got one for my daughter's running. i mostly wear it as i train along side her, and when she's sweaty she hates wearing it.

HRM is good, it's nice to run to the point when feel like dying then look at your wrist and learn that is exactly what is happening. (ran a 400m against her last week and got up into the mid 190's) haha.

the VO2 max is pretty useful for working out recovery too.

How fast do you run 400 metres?

Ha! First attempt since high school and i did 1:09 something.

Nearly vomited. In fact if i had anything in my stomach i would have. Only just beat my daughter too.

In other news, if i was an 11 year old girl, i would have qualified for state titles.

Shithouse. Still cant duckdive a board or do a pushup on it. Any bump or knock on it is still agony too.

But i can run like a rocket. But only barefoot. No shoes.

Most annoying injury ever. Caught 3 waves in Gita and that was it. Duckdiving 6 inches deep in that juice was calamitous.

It's got to be the worst distance to run at any age

Surely a marathon would be worse.

I used to run a bit when I was a teenager. Could do a half marathon with little or no training. In fact did one after being out clubbing until 4.00. Went home and shagged my girl a bit and probably had two hours sleep. I was only doing about 15ks a week in the lead up and did the half in 89 mins which was a shit time for me but I felt ok and finished no problem. I decided I should pull my finger out so joined a group who were getting coached on the track. One of the things we did was 200 & 400 mtr interval training. ie one fast 200 or 400 followed by a slow interval of tr same distance. I think they called it a fartlek session. Anyway after doing a session of 400 reps. I have never been as rooted in my life and threw up several times in the long jump pit. So yeah 400 is hard.

An 89 minute half is pretty good, were you still on the pingas from the night before?

Fartlek is Swedish for speed-play.
It isn't fun at all.

400s are essentiallly a lactate tolerance event. They suck.

I ran a 22 and tiny bit 200 at high school. Could'nt run a 400 for the life of me. Can't run fast in a straight line either. If you needed a bloke to run reasonably quick in a circle I was your man.
