Was this recent
Early season they were a long way out

The return trip much closer
yeah about a month ago.

a guy waved us in at cudgen, there were 5 or 6 biggish whites trailing a whale on the back bar.

heaps of dolphins too ... they were swimming all under and through us.
Dolphins protect humans from sharks, if there are dolphins present you have nothing to fear.

I reckon I've had dolphins warn me of sharks.
George Greenough also has spoken of it.

The myth is that when there are dolphins around there are no sharks.

Nearby Dolphins being skittish and darting about, as opposed to milling around as they usually do, is a good indicator to paddle in.

This pic of the Swansea FAD gives you some idea of just how hard the EAC runs when it's in full swing in January and february.
17 Kms out off Swansea in 100 metres of water, the FAD is anchored to the bottom. It stands about 2 metres out of the water normally.
Closer to shore the current isn't even noticeable.

Fcuk that's a lot of current. Five knots?

in about 89-90 a guy got attacked at half tide at evans. I remember him saying dolphins were going nuts just before hand, then he got blasted from nowhere.

The day before the Kiwi bloke got taken at Cactus in 2000, the local primary school was have a day out at the beach either the day before or a couple of days before, my understanding it was just west of caves. The talk around the town was about what a magical day they had with a pack of dolphins that came in and played with the kids all day, could be a coincidence but the people there say looking back at it it seemed like the dolphins were creating a barrier. Just a story I have heard a few times from a couple of different local sources, we all know how stories grow.

I had the dolphins circling around me at dusk at north wall and it felt like they were creating a barrier. Next morning that blonde kid got bit on the leg.
