Lot of hipsters riding clumsily on too straight retro style mals at Bondi.

Competent surfing on a minimal is way better than most people posing on old skool longboards, and then kicking out and letting them tumble end over end

I have fond memories of surfing garie beach once on my mini mal. Punchy head high plus swell, fast walling, sectioning quick but make-able.

Some wannabe local / surf-bogan looking late 40s looking dude and his mate of similar appearance and vibe (who I will refer to as Gavin from engadine and warren from Heathcote) were both out there on the same peak as I was. Both giving me sideways glances of sneering disapproval, and grinning between themselves, most certainly because of my board of choice.

So anyway, I took off on a set, right deep in the bowl. Gavin looks back over his shoulder at me, drops in but proceeds only to do a couple of wiggling half turns then eventually kicks out.

I didn't bother saying anything, and acted like it didn't happen. Next set that came through was a solid four footer. I edged in early and got shacked on take off, sprinted down the line belting out two critical top turns (for a mini mal) and finished the wave up with a big cutback.

No more sneering sideways glances, and Gavin and warren both paddles in and went out again right down the other end of the beach, which was mostly closing out.

:)

Well get your competent mini mal skills warmed up, for there is a veritable Deluge of swell preparing to strike the NSW coasts.

On the contrary. Next decent swell and the mini mal goes straight back in the cover where it belongs

Same spot as yesterday. A much better session than yesterday. I love how the lack of sunshine put the crowds off.

Not to mention the fresh onshore.
That top bank is lining up well at the moment though.

That lost in the past logger clearly didn't anticipate your gravity defying punt over the section.
Wake up old man! It's 2017 there's incoming and it's Crabmeat Thompson!

argh, not even. He was young. late 20's. Not quite outside, not quite inside. Just waiting on a log in the middle of where the walls were going on the sets. I just tapped the lip and came down right on top him mid-bail of his board. i had no real idea he was there until a nano second before impact.

now that's cooled down (physicially, not emotionally - it never bothered me. If i'm stupid enough to surf there I accept the whole sideshow attached to it) my wrist is rooted.

a rooted wrist.

 Boom tish.

Thats the thing about boards larger than short boards, sure they are easier to paddle into waves but everything else is much harder e.g. getting the fk out of the way, handling, turning, um everything

Somedays after riding my 7'4 All Rounder I feel like I have been wrestling a buffalo.

By that I mean making love to a Silverbacks partner and fighting him off in between position changes. Did I not make myself clear?
