Who the hell wants to feel the water? i'm just gonna come out and say it: long distance paddling is spectacularly retarded. dressing it up as some sort of quasi mystical experience is like tying a sparkly bow tie around a dog turd

Tripping out with fatigue on the ocean in the middle of nowhere... and hitting this point where you wonder how the fcuk you're gonna get back in.
It's pretty wild.

Um...I don't want to mention wave size but I agree.Nick Carroll wrote:Fun! 3-5' Newport doing its finest impression of Saquarema. Fcuk I rip.
Came home from work early. Son said he'd had an epic session at Tama. Went down for a look. Very crunchy and Maccas was breaking well. Wind was getting into it by then. Nice banks though.

Middle distance runners like us have to stick together against the onslaught of the colonials.foamy wrote:Stick to the mud mate.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Well hardly any surfers go outside headlands, or further offshore than a couple of hundred metres, or into water more than a few metres deep. Honestly we go on about The Ocean etc but the surfing experience is pretty limited to shoreline dwelling. You might go further out on a boat but you don't feel the water much in a boat, indeed it makes you seasick thanks to the dislocation between you and the water surface. (not counting skip here, I bet he never gets seasick) On a racing paddleboard you're putting your hands into the water on every stroke and feeling every surface movement for an advantage, for long periods. (yesterday wasn't that long, maybe an hour, but still long enough to get super connected with the water). If you want to go pretty fast then you really have to feel the water closely and time all your movements in sync with it. It's a learned skill but some people seem to have a natural ease with it. It's also super hypnotic and can cause you to zone right out, possibly the source of the quasi mystical thing GSTQ is jabbering on about. Though I dunno if you get that crawling through Welsh mud.Legion wrote:You reckon? What's "few" mean?Nick Carroll wrote:... she is feeling the water in a way few surfers ever do.

one thing that the soulier than thou brigade should always bear in mind is that the act of surfing or paddle boarding or whatever is perilously close to the goat boater or sea kayaker experience. imagine them wanking on about super hypnotic zoning! you'd punch them in the throat, and rightly so

God forsaken landlubbers.
I feel an Ahab like tirade coming on.
Aye, I gets scared in the ocean, for the sea she is an unforgiving mistress.
