Over 30 years of surfing and have never yet once had to think about not rely upon “kilojoules” to figure out what’s going with conditions. Pretty sure that’s the same for about 99.9999% of the global surfing community. There’s only one forecasting site using the measurement. Try find another. There isn’t. That in itself tells you all you need to know. It’s to be giggled and guffawed at mercilessly.
I just don’t get why anyone gives a shit what Cranked uses. I think it’s really just a case of internet trolls trying pass themselves off as old guard self appointed surfing experts to massage their egos.
Surfing for over 30years? I’ve been surfing for 55 years and only ever used the little black and white map of Aust.in the newspaper for most of it, until recently. So what?
This continued obsession with Cranked and pictures of him and his wife in Bali, his choice of surfboard construction and now this, is going to get someone a TOTY.
I don’t care what cranked uses. If it’s working for him, so be it. What pictures? And tuflites are rubbish. And if they’re working for him, so be that.

I have zero concern for cranked. I’m saying the kJ measurement is superfluous. irrespective of whether or not there’s any science to it. Swell height-direction-period-fetch should be enough to go off to gauge size/power. If not, then surely by now, kJ would be mainstream. Or at the very least be used somewhere else as well, not just forecast-surf dot com or whatever it is

You might be right MM, but the other side of the coin is Cranked putting it out there, copping a bit of flak and then defending himself to the death over it.

It's up to him of course, but if you put shitt up on a surfing forum and you can't cop a bit of ribbing over it, maybe it ain't such a good idea.

He seems to cope OK with it though, gives at least as good as he gets....no harm no foul?

He also posts plenty of stuff, maybe the majority, that gets nothing but hoots and shakas.
There is no “other side of the coin” with Cranked, he’s a good honest contributor on here.

Never mind the pics, just another nasty moment on here with someone left trying to defend something that needed no defence, best left in the pages of history. Not directed at you Hatch, but history seems to just keep repeating itself here, hence the mention of it.
Happy to debate the surf forecast site and Kilojoules tho.
I actually stumbled on the site when I was getting ready to go to Sumatra with my son a few years ago, it had some good info on the area in Sth. Sumatra I was going, seasonal average wind strength, directions, swell direction and size, all in percentages.
I spent some time on there exploring different aspects provided, there’s a lot of stuff that’s unique to the site, some useful, some probably more superfluous than useful, but I found the site generally useful at the time and to be honest haven’t really used it much since because the places I surf have better more up to the minute info on other sites.
I did notice the Kilojoules scale and out of curiosity took note of it daily while I was in Sumatra and found it interesting but, like board volume, just another spec. that wasn’t top of the list of things to consider.
The thing is, I don’t think anyone should dismiss it out of hand. Is it really that inconceivable that it might one day become common place?

It’d be good to get some weigh in from Ben matson, Craig brokensha, et al.

I think the idea of special treatment for me is a very good idea though.

Guys there was 2 million hits on Surf Forecast over the last 6 months. Most for about a minute, obviously they were just checking the kJs for their local. I think the kJ cat is already out of the bag.

I find it immediately understandable whereas swell period, etc, blah, blah has never really registered. Great if it does for someone though. Realistically it doesn't make as much sense in sheltered coastlines with variable sand banks as in a place like Indo or the Pacific Island with large uninterrupted swell arriving on shallow reefs.

Love the cranky vs Steve tard offs though.

Cmon for Christ Sakes. How on earth do you know that. You could check all other variables within 60 secs also.

It was purely to tongue in cheek to annoy the kJ haters Hatchy.

But then again you never know, I just checked Surfline and Magic Seaweed, their average visit time and number of pages per visit were double that of Surf Forecast, so maybe there is something to it as most hits would be purely to ascertain surf conditions then get out.

Also the category ranking for both has dropped recently, Surf Forecast was unchanged

Cranked, you’re an OCD completist with plenty of time on his hands - for a week, take a morning, noon and night picture of your favoured spot and post it together with the Kj rating and any other supporting evidence you feel necessary. That will surely sway the naysayers to your side of the argument

It will come to be before anyone ever pencils metric dims on a surfboard blank.
Butterflying the penis is already a thing Braithy, I’ll get to work researching a reputable backyard proponent for you in anticipation.

Wow 10 pages of Kilojoule tardfest ! And no sign of the dribble ceasing
This is fanspastic
I think I'm about done now salty, besides I'm rested now and its time to head back to the surf. Its nowhere near the forecast size, I think its because the 16s swell has dropped off as predicted, but the 22s swell has not arrived. Still good waves though.

A few guys from Margaret River were in the water, just arrived from surfing 15' (30' faces) in WA to surf that same swell here.
