How good surfers get DRIVE out of light performance boards in weak waves is beyond me. That's a f&ckibg big skill right there. Doing decent turns is easy if you've got that thing driving. Otherwise start wiggling and pumping.
Only a small percentage can. The rest are fùcking kidding themselves. Old mate in the red shirt in that over 40’s comp footage included.

Busting the most radical turns in the waves most critical section sure beats the shit out of gliding or nose riding, takes a lot more skill, and is a hell of a lot more exciting. I think most would agree on that.

But if your link up between your rad turns is underpowered, jagged and tic tacky and looks like utter shit, then the ugly eye sore wins out.

Middle aged, 6 mil wettie, small sloppy waves on a sheltered
coastline, freezing cold water, defiantly “core”.

He’d be flapping harder than a seagull choking on a hot chip.

Poor fellow is way off with the "no right and wrong" thing though

There's no moral point to be made re surfing style and technique, no right and wrong, but man there are very much things that work and things that don't. And most of the things that work, work across all kinds of surfboard and most kinds of wave.

Like I am watching a heat at Keramas right now, and Steph Gilmore is a thing that works, and Nikki Van Dijk is a thing that doesn't quite work.

Don't worry about the Mean Girls GST. They are just premenstral because the surfs flat.

So what would our brains trust qualify as an intermediate surfer?
Bottom end is easy but the distinction between the top end and advanced to me seems as much about rhythm as individual skills.

Recently?

I've been here for ten years and you've had it all that time.
Stepped up a notch over the last year. I mean really crap surf. I used to get frustrated but now I am more accepting. My philosophical approach has developed to the next level. Recent trip up the coast reminded me of the pay off for persevering.

I think gradually dialling my current ride in has kept me interested as well. Also because I can chuck it in the car easily and it duck dives way better than my other regular ride makes it handy.

I really mean my idea of why I'm paddling out has been affected, as we have been discussing, by all these adult learners. They are happy to just catch a wave. Why not?
From my perspective, surfing really good waves a lot of the time, my ambition is not so much to ride better per se, but to catch and make those 200-500m waves, then to do it on bigger and bigger waves. No one really gives a fcuk how you do it, just so long as you do. But its the Balinese who really impress, taking amazing lines and generating incredible speed.

To tell the truth eggs are one thing I avoid buying when I’m grocery shopping. So you may say I’m an intermittent egg buyer who usually lets someone else buy them.

No he is suggesting you are Intermediate

Polebean asked a generic question about this back there somewhere. Truth for me is I do not think the word means anything. There is such a huge gulf between a beginner surfer and a super skilled pro level surfer these days that to try to moderate the gap in some way is kind of impossible. “Intermediate”? More a Dunning-Kruger thing than an actual thing perhaps.
