steve shearer wrote:we were comparing consistency of the Ballina stretch with Sydney and Iggs uses the Sunshine coast to bolster his argument.......that's leading with the chin.
NO. "you" were comparing Ballina (alone) as a recent diversion from the initial criteria of SEQ/n-NSW vs Central to South NSW because you couldn't form a credible argument by including the rest of SEQ/n-NSW. Of course Ballina stretch is more consistent. Nobody in their right mind would argue that. But the rest of it, ain't even close.
My initial and current position is that from the Central to South coast stretch (vs. SEQ/n-NSW) there's more overall options in any given combination of swells, winds, sizes, etc. due to the continually varied coastline, that accommodates the varied elements better.

Your only response because you couldn't keep up the divergence from the actual topic.

Ballina
Surf: Bumpy 3-4ft E
Winds: Moderate NE
Weather: Partly Cloudy
Rating: 2/10
Dawn report: Another morning with onshore winds from dawn. Terrible looking conditions across the coast even though the swell is up a bit. Lots of 3ft+ sets from the south and east but
nowhere to recommend
How are the "back beaches" working out for you ?
You see, this is where the benefits of a "varied coastline" offering "assorted options" comes into play.

Yes. Divergence. The initial comparison was SEQ/n-NSW & central coast thru to south coast.
Memory loss? Fish oil might help

Yeah, see there is this spot called Tallows just up the road.
Loves NE winds.
Overhead punchy tradewind swell.
You realise that SN Ballina report is done from an office somewhere.
I'll report back but I reckon it will be fun as shitt on the incoming tide. Overhead punchy lefts with a cross-offshore wind.
You getting wet today?

Just for reference, this very pretty 3-4ft winter day with perfect conditions was given a 4/10.

Hatchnam, you seem very worried about the wind.
It's all about how you respond.
Wind not offshore?
Down south, Hatchie is very sad and frustrated.
Up north, we punt.

I have no idea what the E38 is swiv!
But if you can lash a line around a cleat in figure 8's without bending down lasso style, you're on your way.
It's more fun tooling about in them though.
Limited maritime operations that undertake low complexity duties with operators having the following restrictions: ...
Essentially Coxwain Grade 3 NC. Ex 38 was meant to expire and convert to that on July 1 this year, but AMSA extended it until 30 June 2018
Might need some rope practice - my eye splice wouldn't pass the skip test. And yes, tooling about is fun. The university is soon to take delivery of a 20 ft (?) Stabicraft. I'm hoping to get control of that at some stage, but my semi regular operations limit me to a 4 m tinny

jesus iggs. do you really get surf reports from a website? the guys who do them who actually go to the beach – as opposed to bedroom reports using "data" – are still only going to one beach.
up here, the deciding factor in going for a surf has always and will always be about bathymetry. something no forecast or report will ever have any idea about.
i surfed a fun as shit, lumpy, bowly right yesterday for 2 hours all because – even in all that wind and lump – the bank was still mechanical. wave after wave spinning down the line for 60+ metres. might go back for more today.

listen to the man Iggs.
If you only stopped leading with the chin and stepped back and listened, you might learn something.

The implied point of my post was the strong north east winds of today are going screw most places up there, and the backbeaches won't offer much protection, though Steve managed to blab out tallows. Here the coastline bends all over the place, so in strong north east winds you'll have a broader range options with more spots to pick from, from clean offshore, lumpy cross-shore, etc. I could name stacks of them, but I won't.
And I think that it's pretty common knowledge that reports sites aren't a catch all, or even overly reliable at times. I just used the report verbatim to go at Steve
Looking back over the pages, we're actually agreeing on many points, but coming to loggerheads on the way the points are being interpreted and defined. As beanpole said, plenty of convergence
