Well MS was pretty spot on for conditions when we bolted to Crescent a couple of weeks ago.....except for the star rating. That was way off....which was good.
Interested to know why you used a surf forecast site based out of Devon, England to surf in NSW.
Good question.
1/ didn't know it was based in Devon. Usually only use it if I'm going somewhere OS
2/now it's one of the only sites that give a detailed week forecast without paying.

The Little East Low that snuck across Nth NSW out into the Tasman was quite unusual and unpredicted.

Just checked forecasts for today at ulus:

Swellnet 8-10
Surf Forecast 6-8
Surfline 10-15
Magic Seaweed 6-8

no reason to change my mind, kJs on Surf Forecast give me a much better idea of what surf to expect

It was, you guys nearly had me bamboozled into accepting feet. The energy of the wave is what counts. Feet do not measure the energy of a wave

Yes, Steve. That's for us who look at synoptic charts. What I meant was it just seemed to pop up rather than come across as a southerly front or roll down from the north like a cyclonic depression. I don't take that keen an interest in conditions up north unless I'm planning on going there. Just keep a general eye on the Synoptics.

That's why surf sites where invented. That is for those who want to be urshered into the waves by expert opinion.

For the next 6 hours:

Wind: SW
Height: 2ft
Swell direction: SE

Know your limits today guys.

Totally, that thing was accurately forecast four days out

It amazed me that so many people were shocked by the appearance of a swell from it.

Just checked forecasts for today at ulus, below are the forecasts (morning then afternoon)

Swellnet 10-8
Surf Forecast 8-6
Surfline 15-10
Magic Seaweed 8-6

Edit: swapped, was afternoon then morning, its dropping

Does anyone know what these forecasts are?

1. Are they open ocean or actual wave heights as they break at ulus
2 Are they in real feet or surfer feet.

There are four possibilities based on the answers to the above questions and I have no idea what they answers actually are.

My estimate of the waves faces in real feet this morning for the set waves was 8-10'

It does seem though that none of these sites are using surfer feet, otherwise they would have been something like 4' dropping to 3' in the afternoon.

If my supposition is correct, why do they not use surfer feet?

By the way the kJs gave me pretty much what I expected, maybe just a little over estimated.

Surfline does not use surfer feet.

Magic Seaweed uses a pretty much indentical scale to Surfline.

Sounds they are using actual face height and Swellnet most accurately accords with your experience Cranked.

Ulus will be bigger than Impossibles though.

cranky your beyond Muzza swell, the winds are epic but it all looks a bit too far east for the wind angles

heavy winds over a lot of ocean but mostly around 230 degrees. Radial spread should see most of the size get to Bali and eastern Java but a lot of it looks like it will hit NW Australia and all the eastern Indo chain with more consistency

The Muzza storm was further west and with stronger winds at its peak.

Hilarious. Look at the 3 ft photo, it's small. The 5ft photo is 3ft. According to Surfline I'm a fking charger. My new favourite site.

This comment on that Surfline link seems to back up the mainstream Aussie scale well.

“ arii 11/21/2013 03:10 PM
I'm from Hawaii.I am 59.We don't look at the back of the wave when estimating it,we look at the face.Never have, never did. Can't tell you who started saying we measure the back. But we do call a 7-8 foot wave 4 feet.I was looking at the pictures and calling them how I estimate them, and was surprised at how accurately they matched the heights listed divided by half.On the news channels, they post wave face heights so tourists and visiting surfers are not caught unawares. “
