Well that’s uncanny! Receive a call from a mate who lives in Avoca I haven’t been in contact in a while. Tells me the surf shop has a full stock of McCoys. Imma hit that tomorrow

It’s all TSA epoxy by the looks. Which I’m totally ok with. They’re chunky boards, and in PU they’d probably feel a little too heavy at those dims

Yeah nah lol. But there were plenty of beanpole types there. And young man-bun haircuts with converted hiace campers.

I really do prefer the southern NSW coast. And Victoria.

I’m not at Avoca. Still can’t get my head around riding a McCoy in solid Gold Coast waves. I kind of get the General McCoy idea but in dredgie point breaks?
Spent many years scoring chunkier boards on the Gold Coast to take South and visa versa.

I surfed the point this arvo on the 6’2 DS.
There was no one out. I thought it was only 3-4ft but turned out much bigger. Another guy came out and joined me.
First jump almost got out then got swept all the way down the corner and had to start all over again.
Just mistimed it with sets.
Got out fine the 2nd try.
I really need to learn the reddy jump off spot as I’ve never done it and would have saved me a lot of paddling today.

I’d had it 18 months and the heavier and hollower the waves are the better it goes. It’s got stacks of rocker and a rolled vee bottom, so that’s no surprise. I’ve had it handle DOH plus surf with ease

Interesting. I can get how that could handle largish waves. It’s the dredging fast bit that I don’t get. I know Geoff McCoy and Cranky reckon they work well.

Rocker works best in hollow conditions and vee bottoms drag thereby control and stabilise speed.

What don’t you get ?

Rocker?
Okay.
Big V?
Okay.
Big fat arse round tail?
Don’t get at all.
Now even fish although wide tailed have effectively two narrow tails to bite into the wave with fins set on the rail.
I get these things can ride the foamball but that’s about as much traction as Geoff McCoys theories get from me.

Grab an Album Twinnie ... you'll love it.
I’ve owned a few twin fins before. Fun in softer conditions but not too keen on them in reefs or anything of size and consequence.
Like I said, get an Album twin ...

And then you'll surf like Josh Kerr.
On those bigger indo days in the vid I'd probably like a quad or a channel bottom thruster.

Not many people could even dream of surfing like Kerr, but it proves that modern twins perform in the big stuff.

I'd be on a quads for sure ... but then again, I mostly am, although I've been having a bit of fun with tri-fins of late.

Yeah well I’m not josh Kerr. I did however ride a twinny one time at rennies bombie at double overhead and it held in fine. Kinda like high speed skate bowl lines.

Anyway. Sorted. Just walked out with a 6’3 McCoy nugget. Sticker price $825, got it for $700.

And beancalipers, the big chunky round tail holds in fine. Foots right over the back fin, McCoy thruster fins are 10% bigger than large standard fins, and the rails though rounded full and soft hold very well.

I’ve pushed my old nugget hard off the bottom, and off the top, right in the bowl and steepest sections, and it holds just fine.

Like.

I had a 6'4" years ago - might have to indulge - be back in the water in a few weeks will be perfect for paddling with a busted wing :-D-:
