I was just going to do an afternoon session and decided to do a surf check first.

To do that I headed down to where I was going to surf. What I did without thinking though, was to note where the surfers were siting and how many of them were sitting there.

There were 4 at the southern take off zone and they were about 700m from shore. There were another 4 at the northern take off zone and they were about 900m out.

That was all I needed to know, surf check complete. So I walked back to my bike and headed off to do something else for the afternoon.

I'll be working through this one, adding a bit of detail -scatter diagrams etc - and it should be good to go for next years debate.

Godsave, would photocopies of notes I made as a professional forecaster from the Northern Rivers/SEQLD region from 2 years ago really mean anything to you?

Here, have a youtoob video of a bubba blade in action instead.

I''ll keep you updated on the Magic Seaweed comparison though, if you are really keen.

Somewhere between 15 and 22 feet.

Makes sense. They are based in South Devon. Every surf forecasting site is more precise for their local coasts than surf spots a long way away.

I am keen. As I said, magicseaweed has been deadly accurate for here for years and years but there are still people round here who think it isn't, probably because they are clueless. Now, you are obviously not clueless but - and call me hypersensitive if you will - there seems to be a strong whiff of Australian exceptionalism, a kneejerk 'who do these pommie upstarts think they are' feeling behind a lot of the criticism. For what it's worth, magicseaweed was the only site that got anywhere near forecasting the swell correctly when I was in the maldives but let's see where the data lead us, eh

journalism (read surf forescasting) 101:

someone tells you it's raining outside.
someone else says it's fine and sunny.

what do you do?
report that it's both?
no.

you stick you're fcukin head out of the window and tell it like it is.

Magicseaweed is pretty shit for Sydney or at least it was a few years back, haven’t bothered worh it since. Even windguru seems to be a bit off the mark lately

I have it on good authority that the surf in Sydney is just as shit as it is here. Looking at iggy's pictures, I can well believe it

Oh, it's not like it's one of my shibboleths or anything Nick. For years I was happy to accept the loudly shouted australian narrative of the best surf and the best surfers in the world. It's only in the last few years that the doubts have started to creep in
