Far out NC awesome. From one waterman to another. Respect brother.

Shearer wouldn’t stand a chance out there.

hand tiller, no blocks.

In your humble opinion Steve, do you reckon you have charged harder then Nick?

I'm on my way to the bukit on Monday and so is a good swell for the week. Best day on Wednesday when it peaks at 10' 16s and a perfect late season SSW. Yes of course it's a light offshore too.

I don't know the correct method sunny.

I used to do my best estimation in feet from the flat base to the highest point, using a surfer as scale, then divide by 2 and round down. But even this, it seems, is fraught with problems. The biggest waves I surf would probably be called 3' or maybe 4', not very informative IMHO.

In any case it doesn't take the period into account which is just as important as the swell height, so I just use the kJs, which peak at 4,600 on Wednesday. So probably 8 to 12 wave sets every 30 minutes or so, some maxing at triple overhead, if the forecast is correct.

Easy paddle out between sets.

It's not fraught with problems. It's very informative. If I am with anyone I know who surfs, that's how it is. Well understood.
It does appear to be a strange relationship though, because it seems that as the waves get bigger the foot seems to get bigger as well. So initially one surfer foot is around two imperial feet, but as the waves get bigger the foot gets bigger too, so that eventually one foot is three then four imperial feet feet and so on.

Yes so simple!

Can you just tell me though, what the the relationship between the actual wave size in imperial feet and "surfer" feet and I'll be good to go.

As I understand it, in the Hawaiian scale the conversion factor slides with size.
So, a 6 foot wave may be 10 to 12 feet imperial, but a 20 - 25 feet wave is probably around 25 - 35 imperial.

If you haven't learnt yet at this stage of your life and it's so confusing to you, I'd stick with your magic seaweed kilojoules.

It's trivially simple to every single local grommet though, and always has been since I was a grommet and well before that too.
Like Trev I started surfing in the 60s so I missed out. Though I am disappointed at your ad hominem response Legion. I thought I might get some real insider knowledge about the relationship between imperial and surfer feet

And yes I know Iggy gave us a table of values but that's hard to remember. All I want is a simple rule of thumb. At ulus it can be 20', 30' or 40' imperial feet and I don't want to be telling Banksy and the other chargers the wrong thing.

Of course I don't really care foamy, I never ever just say feet, I always suffix it "faces" or use knee, waist, shoulder, head high and multiples thereof. Even meters is good.

I do find it a bit a absurd though that the good and simple measurement of "feet" has become so corrupted.

On Surf forecast I have the units set to metric so I can get the wind speed in km/h, I don't even look at wave size any more, just kJs and period. This week its over 2000kJ most of the week dropping to a 300kJ grovel by Sunday

Fun, plenty of fun. Good banks

Despite that saw two blokes trying to have a scrap over a drop in. Plenty of waves taken off them by the pack as they were arguing.
