Ha ha people are competitive.Thud wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 10:53 pmIt's funny you know. I ran into a guy I went to school with who is now a district court judge. We never really got on. Even with all his success and me being quite complimentary about it he still had a chip in his shoulder about being a mediocre sportsman. People are weird.
Surf clubs are like that, they're torn between people who were tin god athletes as kids and people who were shamed by tin god athletes when THEY are kids.
So for five years everyone's all "yeah surf sports!!" and going blatantly overboard with the Nippers competition program, and for the next five years, it's all passive aggressive "surf clubs are really about committees" and building new toilet facilities.
Phase One involves horrendous parents, jacked up super grommets and future district court judges being shamed into the Tug Of War C team. Phase Two means your club captain can't swim.

Me too. Daughter has never been sporty. It's always been Dance and Drama. Luckily I got my son up on a board by the time Nippers came around so we just went surfing. Soccer was bad enough.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
My kid did the Maroubra nippers last season. Did pretty well but figured she’d rather just play with her friends at the beach or do whatever else rather than be pegged down to a routine with nippers. Rest assured though, if you send yours you WILL be cheering them on to win. It’s hard not to.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
honest, if you want your kid to surf, taking them to Nippers is a really good idea. But there are Nippers and Nippers. Some clubs are pretty cool with it, have a surf savvy leadership, get the kids paddling around on boards and they suddenly get the taste. Other clubs are how drailed describes, full of "age managers" who are terrified of the water and overly keen, possibly slightly desperate parents who carry on about everything, and even better, parents who use Nippers as babysitting.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
The best Nippers are the ones when the kids basically gang up on the parents.
Re: Where did you surf today ?
I went to nippers (I guess I was about 12) because my Mum said I couldn't surf by myself if I didn't. Then at 13 I couldn't surf if I didn't get my SLS certificate, then 15 I had to get my bronze.
I hated it all. I guess I was still reading tracks magazines where surfers = cool, clubbies = not so cool.
As soon as I got my bronze I did one season patrol and have never been back in a surf club besides the odd Qld one to have a schooner overlooking the surf.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Don't think there were Nippers in 1962.
But Dad said I was 15 and had to do my Bronze Medallion.
Lots of Kirra Lifesavers had malibus all stored in with the "real" life saving gear.
Some of the good guys let me borrow theirs.
I never got my Bronze and was surfing every free moment (on borrowed boards) by mid year.
Worked two Christmas holidays to get enough money for a board.
Looking back, I wish I had done my Bronze, but I was pretty irresponsible in those days.

You aren’t the room Yuke You are just a wonky cafe table with a missing rubber pad on the end of one leg.

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
More or less exactly the same, Trev. They had cadet lifesavers in those days. I got most of the way through my Bronze and bailed. Tied for first place in the Cadet Clubbies events that year, surf swim, beach sprint, musical flags....don't think we had a pillow fight.
The surf club was like a private club for a bunch of guys mainly from Murwillumbah. Different clubs were affiliated with different League Teams in town. The clubhouse was full of 8' V Bottoms. A lot of the older guys had been okay surfers but stopped abruptly when boards went under 7'. A few younger guys including Ray Gleave used to take them out for a paddle once in a while. Boards were down to 5'10" by then though but 5'6"-5'3" werent uncommon. Most of the surfies weren't welcome in the clubhouse unless they were brothers of the older guys. In fact a bunch got kicked out for letting locals use the facilities in Winter. That's basically when everyone bailed.

I believe so. Haven't seen him in a few years. There's been a couple of reunions I've missed. Going to try and make the next one.
Definitely has the drop knee cutback down like no one else.

How the fuck would Beans know. He doesn’t leave Bondi unless there’s a sale at Dan Murphy’s at Randwick.
