Not sure of the veracity of story though I heard back in the 80's-90's there was a Filipino bride racket running over there. Marketed to the brides-to-be with the allure of "life on a tropical island setting" etc. Also overrun with bikers and drug dealers. Pretty dodgy place apparently

Russell Island is known for the infamous land scams of the early 1970s,[4] when many of the islands farms were divided into over 20,000 blocks.[3] At the time, the area, with a population of less than 500, did not have a local authority enforcing planning regulations. Heavily advertised and sold off by unscrupulous vendors, these blocks were often not where the unwary customers thought they were buying.[4] It all rode on the vague promise of a bridge from the National Party government at the time. Media reports exposing the scam pointed to blocks that were underwater at high tide and the lack of public land.[5]

I still don't buy the "official" narrative about 9/11. Oh sure, it happened, fcuk yeah. But who and why and how I'm, not convinced it was what we've been told.

The fires last year brought out some interesting characters from the southern part of the island.
Don't want anything to do with authority until something like that happens then it's all "the council should do this and the council should do that"
Totally ignored the fact their properties were full of junk, uncontrolled undergrowth and they refused to acknowledge any evacuation plan.

Holy shit what a day. Surfed frenchmans at consistent chest to head high with some bigger sets. Nice shaped peak to take off on, with a walled up pockety bowl to let loose on. Some of them you could take off behind the peak, come off the bottom then straight into a carve off the top, drop back into the bowl and wrap a roundhouse cutback. Good waves you could grind out three of four full rail turns. South swell was hitting the bank at perfect angle and just running down the line. Surfed early morning for two solid hours, came in and smashed a huge hamburger and chips, then went out for round two for another two hours. Got even better on the second session as the tide drained out. Bus driver looked and vibed like Christopher walken. Cracked a tinny of xxxx bitter on the back of the flyer on the way back and mind surfed the wake running off the back of the boat. Brought a lot of old memories back. It's been over 15 years since I last surfed over there.

Did you shape the hamburger until you could eat it with one hand so you could eat the chips, or did you eat the hamburger with two hands and then eat the chips?

Pulled the top bun off stuff it with chips. Smashed that. Then ate the rest of the burger layer after layer. You'd have needed a hippos head to eat it normal

I could easily get used to living over there. Sell up, buy a place over there and just get on the welfare and pleb out big time. claw back some of the tax I've paid over the years. Do nothing but surf fish and eat.

Not many rentals.
https://m.realestate.com.au/rent/in-poi ... e&adcall=0

Though you could probably scratch something up for accommodation on air BnB or flatmates dot com.

If you're happy enough to live in dunwich or amity rather than point lookout then buying/renting would be cheaper. Catches plenty of south swell too. Nearly as much as the Ballina region.

Those beachies can get insane too. So can cylinders and further west on their day

And braithy - if you're into the single life, then holy shit dude.
Fresh off the boats daily. It's a tourist holiday party time place

Yeah you could buy a place with 3 bedrooms for $180000. At some point that whole Moreton Bay Area is gonna go bananas.

oh, yeah it's a mecca over there. There's so many uncrowded waves. I could easily offshore my gig to the island and live there. I just didn't think anywhere rented, you could only buy.

then again, to live there. that island would get pretty small.
