Consistent double overhead sets on the bukit today, perfect conditions after 12pm, very few out at various times.

I surfed in the morning and got a few.

hhhmmmm, funny coincidence. After I get bumped at the Point this guy or gal sets off the Sharpes reciever multiple times.

Jesus Steve, come and live in Bali, it's way safer.

I did an order of magnitude calculation for the chance of death by shark in WA for a keen surfer over a 10 year period and it was 1 in 10,000

yeah, it's funny. I did a little tally of my shark encounters and they are starting to add up.

I surf mainly Ballina beaches, with the ox and the pass backups.
The last 2.5 years, the only shark I've seen is a 3ft hammerhead at the pass.

People have seen them near me apparently though.

they can be right beside you and you wouldn't know it.
If you fish you become a lot more sensitive to predatory fish movements.

It's amazing to me how little general knowledge there is amongst the surfing community about bait balls/predatory fish ID.

I'm always trying to get intel and when guys say they saw fish busting up and I ask 'what where they" ....most people couldn't tell the difference between a garfish, mullet or a tailor....or ID what species of tuna is around.

Apparently had a 3 metre plus shark right next to me and 3 others a few weeks back at an almost empty DY. Abumlance copter spotted it and alerted the tower. I was watchful that day but obviously didn't make a difference. Was talking to a daily fisherman afterwards who said that fish were flush on the beach right now, 45cm whiting, salmon etc...said that he'd been catching nought at other places. Didn't know why.

of course, did you see that drone footy where that white rushed a guy as he was paddling into a wave?

he never saw that.

2014 I watched a ten foot+ white swim right up the whole length of the sandbank at the Point. Winter, so anyone looking in that direction would have seen nothing but glare. Swam within a metre of 30 surfers and not one person saw it. I was up on the headland with polaroid sunnies and had a perfect view of it.

Must have been nervy watching that Steve. If it had attacked powerless to stop it yet maybe a sense of guilt for just standing back and watching it (helplessly)

This autumn has been ridiculous. I'm actually at a point where I'm concerned about some adrenal fatigue episode – whereby i awaken one morning only to discover I've turned into bodhizaffa – once it's finally died.

where to? maroubra, that's where. the great equaliser for you, bringing you back down to earth, as you watch all that glorious swell march up the coast and go to waste.
