Oh god I don't know if I rally wanna get into this too far but whatever

Look cranked, you started out here by quoting the effect of water being pushed from a wider pipe into a smaller one and saying this was the Bernoulli effect and this was what was happening with channels or Bonzers etc.

It's just not, OK? There are many places water can go upon contact with channels etc. The water is not constrained into a tunnel. It is deflected by a surface that is weighted by the human standing on it. The deflection creates a lifting effect. That lifting effect increases with the angle of deflection and with the quantity of fluid deflected in given interval. This in not the Bernoulli effect as you were describing it. Such an effect is the Venturi effect and it isn't why surfboards do what they do.

Lift = speed, drag = control. That's really all that's happening with surfboards. They're pretty simple things.

Neither side has convinced me.
Who has a better understanding of physics?
Who has a better understanding of surfboard design?
Who has a better understanding of both?
Who can explain it so I understand?

Empirical evidence would suggest that it's actually pretty difficult to argue with this

Expanding on this position, Nick Carroll then wrote:I will say that the majority of what I would term "failed innovations" in the field, that is design and/or manufacturing ideas which are visibly fcuken stupid, have arisen from some sort of wildly misguided take on hydrodynamic theory.
What about the other side of the coin then. Have there been any successful innovations grounded in hydrodynamic theory that have revolutionised any aspect of surfing? Or has all progress in board design been incremental, trial and error stuff?

The Venturi effect is an example of the Bernoulli principle, as is the behaviour of fluids in pipes and the and other pressure differentials caused by fluids moving across curved surfaces.

At the level of physics surfboards are not by any means simple things.

Let's call the whole thing off.

upon laying eyes on the turbo tunnel i immediately flew into a furious rage and picked up my monitor and flung it out of my 6th floor apartment window and onto a couple who were walking their petite schnauzer.

I may have screamed, fuck you all, in the process.

You see, Thommo, the turbotunnel's actions extend far beyond simple physics.

That little tunnel is actually a connection to an alternate universe from which it draws and harnesses unlimited power.

Its also a connection to a universe where Bernoulli's Principle does not apply and some of that leaks into the surrounding water thus enabling other worldly turns and maneuvers
