Having said that, there was a guy out there today from Norway, riding a good looking, refined mal. Had a smile on his gob when he caught a wave that was just a joy to watch. When a large pod of dolphins came through the line up he flipped out.

This Belgian guy was staying where we were on the Bukit a couple of weeks ago. He could actually turn the board and kind of do a top turn....just....on a mal. Better than many others out there though. He bought the mal there new for about $600 he said. He also had a batik patterned quad fish/Simmons thing about 6'10" or so and another semi hi performance board. Right into the gear.

At $500 this might be a little over budget, but it's good and would hold good resale value if he looked after it (based Wollongong)

Jackson 7'6 x 21 5/8 x 2 3/4

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/north-wo ... 1129928305

Or.. for something cheaper and more refined and shortboard like but still 7'2 length.
$250 in Terrigal. (Offer them $200 tops)

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/terrigal ... 1130610421

Or this 7'4 Dave wood mini mal for $300 in manly

I was wondering what Alun was up to. Living near the Bower in Manly it seems.

The 300 clam Woods from Manly is the go.

Just what the world needs, another fucken English kook. If he's British and a beginner he'll probably be too spacktastic to ride a mid length. You might need to go the full 10ft foamy

That Jackson is at carabines shop by the look of the pic. They've usually got a good selection of 2nd hand boards. Often mid lengths.

Different when you're surfing heaps, but I'm finding 7'+ are great for when you don't surf much. I love mid lengths anyway but more so when I'm in a wave drought. Might be 6 weeks since my last surf :0

My 7'4" jd is a little refined for everyday waves and my 7'0" is great but wish it had a single fin box.
