Where did you surf today ?

I once took a good look at Lurline when it was breaking. Just looking, there was no way I was going to surf it. It was was probably a fat 4ft. I didn't see how anyone could get out there other than by boat or by paddling a long way around. As has been said before, it breaks in front of a cliff face.

thanks, but i think the weekend's prize surely the goes out to that total nutcase in the deadies video, mr. red gun. the guy who had absolutely Zero regard for his own safety and put everything on the line for the slim chance he might make it out of a barrel. that dude got more hidings in that clip, than i've ever received in the past 30 odd years.

Hi guys first post on here. Have spent a lot of time around that spot - only surfed deadmans twice, freaky wave as it closes out before Winki which I much prefer when that size. Checked a mate of mine tow surf it once, tried to get through to Winki got nailed and busted his wrist and ribs.

Here's a vid of a guy making it all the way through Winki (1.15) on his backhand after getting towed although I watched Dayan do it once after paddling in.

There was a vid of Slater on YouTube surfing it at 8-10 foot with only 2 fins in his board and making it look easy! Could only find this link though:

fcuk, this morning was fantastic. Swell strengthened and cleaned up overnight. 3hrs of SW winds on a 10-12' groundswell.

it was weird, looked really weak and insipid this morning, before I dropped the kids to school I checked the point and saw Webby sitting the way the fcuk out on the back button by himself.
within minutes he was stroking into a ten footer, drew two big highlines and stood tall in a massive tube through the main peak section.......

I saw Joel Fitz and Rasta coming with big boards so I ran home and grabbed my nine foot Brewer.

There was nothing nothing then the back reef capping and ten foot waves. Big bomb teepee takeoffs.

Al got the best ones, then I shared a super glassy bomb with him.....first wave. Off a five ten Bonzer to a nine foot Brewer and it felt fcuking fantastic.

I thought alot about Smmnttlll's brother and the nature of depression. Would an experience like this one, fully engaged, senses redlining be enough to snap someone out of depression...or is that slow process of shutting down to the world a kind of soul sickness which is unreachable even by events like this?

Got one more set......on the edge of the bowl of this thing as it came steam-rolling from way the fcuk out to sea and rode it into the rocks down past the hut.

It was so beautiful out there.

I believe it to be the latter unfortunately, thats why it can be so hard to deal with as an outsider as it feels like there is so little you can do to help.

When I rocked up to the point last Easter, I took a panning vid of the lineup, it was a solid 6ft. Captured two guys zigzagging on a set wave.
It was Shep and his mate. It's how they roll up there ducks.

...but wedding cake island, very long way out, very lonely, v sharky, and very high chance of being clobbered by a 10 foot ++ set - big white water rumble, good leggie snapping conditions... Fking nightmare!!!

I guess on a softer rolling swell could be easy ride but with any size ... Much ballsier I reckon.

Sahrks would be the least of my concerns. The waters are a bit barren around here. Otherwise you're on the money.

Some paddle in guys were on it earlier this winter, but it's a rare event.

Never surfed it, almost certainly never will, but have seen it most days in the past 17 years.

Someone else mentioned that the other break nearby, Southys, might be a bit like deadman's. Yeah, I can understand why. Breaks near the cliff face, jumps up, can double up, boil up, throw out, hard to predict but seems to line up with the right tide, right directions etc

old forum chat about wci and lurline. you considered lurline hellhatch? i've seen that break in the very big range and it looks horrendous...not many escape routes and the worst entry / exit, would love to see someone try!

The wave itself looks surfable, if you have the balls to jump off the rocks to get out there then catching the wave looks like a doddle in comparison.

The getting into the water seems pretty straightforward, but at any size the getting out completely astounds and scares me.

One of the most memorable surf events I have witnessed live was there, a crowd on the headland, surfers in the water, rescue choppers flying overhead, great waves, night falling, a young fellow losing his board and swimming in, staying cool and eventually climbing rocks in between 6-8 foot reforms absolutely igniting on the shelf, seriously in danger if he didn't stay cool and committed, crowd cheering and applauding as he clambers on to higher rocks for safety.

It was somewhat huge that day. They would be at that other place on days like that now.

yeah olds, lurline looks quite approachable on smaller day, almost a mal wave. getting in and out doesn't look too bad at that size but the wave probably isn't worth the effort....though crowd pressure in e suburbs makes me think about giving it a crack. i've once seen it break about 15ft i'd guess, different story. definitely surfable, heavy outside drop to shoulder then the deadly reform on the shelf ... would love to have seen the day yr talking about, its a perfect big wave viewing arena

my old man surfed it and wci when he was young. he reckons he was in a surfmag in late 60s, it was credited as unkown, but him and his mates knew it was him. he used to tell me the story from as young as I would listen. when I got a bit older he couldn't find the mag, but in saying that we had packed up and moved to the north coast.hes a straightshooter and a tough ol bloke, Ive no reason to doubt him. hes still got the old Wallace he rode back then to. even had the surf rego sticker on it still when I was a kid.
