haha ... yeah that could be exactly the day. the sun looks a little higher than dawn (not sure why i wrote dusk before lol) so this when the swell plateaued out and become a little more reasonable from the dawn sesh.

some guys paddled for an hour to get out and would just reach out the back and then a bomb set would throw them back onto the beach. it was a pure lotto on who got out.

It took me 45 minutes to paddle out at Casuarina a couple of years ago. Great surf once you got out the back.
Same thing, you'd be within a bee's dick of finally getting out, and another set would come through and put you back on the inside bank treadmill.
Lesson number two was don't surf the wave all the way through, unless you wanted another rinse and repeat of the initial paddle out.

yeah yuke ... wave selection and not getting greedy on them is key to big beachies.

i can never help myself tho ... i've had so many 1 wave sessions bcos i caught my wave too far and couldn't get back out

The worst place I’ve ever surfed for that when there’s some size is off the pool at Merewether. Worst slog ever.
