Re: Where did you surf today ?
The Swellnet article wasn’t about localism, it was about the bullshit storm in the media, social and otherwise.
Re: Where did you surf today ?
It’s not a big deal. Those signs are pretty much everywhere. I thought it was funny, not to be taken seriously hence, my post. Who the fuck would listen to those rock apes.

Being dropped on ones head as an infant can have long lasting repercussions.
The moving finger writes and having writ moves on ... now all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel even half a line ... nor all thy tears wash out a single word of it.
Re: Where did you surf today ?
Nope. Happy as a clam.
I just find behaving in a public space like you have some locked down treaty with a magic entity is a little misguided and is asking for trouble. However, the law unfortunately doesn’t cover “pretend ownership”.
There’s a definite difference between community and localism in and out of the water. Localism breeds exclusivity, paranoia, unjust ownership and eventually aggression and violence. At least a dog know it is protecting its home. So based on those circumstances dogs are more intelligent than these types of humans.I hope this comparison doesn’t offend you as you may have friends who ape Frankensteins villagers.,

Re: Where did you surf today ?
I only know of one properly localised spot in Australia.
Everywhere else, no matter what the graffiti says, if you turn up (preferably by yourself for more sensitive spots) and wait your turn you won’t have a problem anywhere in this country.
Actually, I’ll add Narra as a cnut of a spot to the other one I’m thinking of.
I haven’t had a problem there but everyone says if it’s good and your face is unknown you won’t get much.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Does that localised spot start with a B and have very few places to park?

Re: Where did you surf today ?
I don't.
Makes perfect sense to me.
Unless you are completely clueless about basic biology, primate/sapien territorialism is one of the most fundamental aspects of our behaviour.
In fact, it spans the entire animal kingdom and most of plants, bacteria etc etc as well.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Not so much the surfing aspect. More the good and bad of small town attitude. I don’t even think it’s the Sydney exiles driving the disgruntled locals to complain. I think it’s more people in their 50’s and over settling down for the next 20-40 years. Younger people like new things, older people in a villager type of way are suspicious and don’t like new ideas from strangers. It’s been occurring since forever. They get worse when they become grandparents protecting the village. It’s bred into humans and it will never change.steve shearer wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 11:46 amNo, not offended.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
Older people love equity in increasing real estate values.
The rest is just peformance for their mates.
Young people resent old people who have locked up all the assets.

Re: Where did you surf today ?
It’s deeper than that. I don’t think young local people in smaller towns resent their elders for wealth. Maybe in wealthy towns but, in reality that’s Byron, Lennox, parts of central coast, Gong/Kiama but, even then the localism isn’t driven by an inability to buy real estate. It’s driven by bred in human characteristics.steve shearer wrote: ↑Tue Aug 08, 2023 11:58 amOlder people love equity in increasing real estate values.

It just spreads into the surf. Note not many young people under 30 get angry in the surf…..

No, but that can give it a real edge- if people feel like they are becoming strangers in their own town, they can react and push back.
Thats what the Sandon sign was- a little piece of pushback- it's symbolic.
