In the past 10 or more years the vast majority of my surfing has been early and I always wear a rashie in summer ... years ago due to wax rash I always wore longer boardies and a T-shirt  and then a rashie when they were invented ... I am hoping that this is has helped save me from early skin cancer ... I know a sh!t load of blokes my age or younger who come from the 'fun in the sun' era and are having them cut out ... I am actually thankfull for being a sufferer of wax rash which unknowingly was driving my covering up way back then ...

I haven't seen any sharks while surfing for a long time either but like SnT, all the hype is making me paranoid.
I surf at first light on a rocky point with lots of fish, turtles etc. Often alone for the first half hour or so. Now I'm feet up, jumping at shadows etc.
But hell, yesterday - don't know where the crowd was. Alone for 90 minutes. Constant waves, not large but nice shape, steep take offs, longish rides and no (read, "didn't see") sharks . As I left, several people paddled out. 8)
So, the choices.
a/ surf early with sharks (maybe)
b/ surf later and get skin cancer.

I guess the shark option is better - quicker result.
TrevG, I personally prefer the no skin cancer option.
be completely hones i think skin cancer compared to full on shark attack, i take on sharky(scary as that may be) i still got option punch shit out of him if he dont get me first. not many options skin cancer & sick a lot
Isn't that what I said?
either that or an unsightly hairy body.
no way ... I'm no monkey boy ...

I have however been asked to wear a balaclava to cover my face in the surf ... I said that I put on sunscreen but they say I should wear it anyway ... :?

If people's ignorance and fear leads to the hate of sharks. Dont go out. There are plenty of public swimming pools to cool down. Its not our ocean. We are but guests there.

Snorkeled near Ray was about 1.3 metre around, they are elegant and so spooky grey I think whoever thought up ghosts must've seen one like this, calling it Casper :D

Is this a record summer for shark sightings or is it that a blanket has been lifted off the media desgined to keep tourism industry happy?

Hasn't been a shark headline in at least a week.

Everyone must be back at work.

Whilst out snorkeling, I too observed an impressive Ray. , I can't find the right word for that exaggerated wafting motion, or size. This one too was big as me in two directions, minus the head but with a tail  and eerie shade of grey, a wet fur dull glow.

I saw nice one at Manly wharf between the wharf bar area and the old jetcat side of the wharf on friday morning. First eagle ray I have seen in sydney too.

Saw something large-ish Sunday morning out at Turimetta, not sure if it was a shark or not...

The clubbies were doing a slow sweep at Longy yesterday. I was just suspicious of Sunday clubbies going slow in a rubber duckie :?
Al this is gold. "She didn't realise I was fairly high and spent much of the evening trying to figure out why a purple and orange cow wanted me to climb a tree."
