King Tides and Killer Sharks

Post by Donweather » Wed Jan 14, 2009 2:14 pm

I've just read the swellnet article on the King Tides and Kiler Sharks and it got me wondering. Whilst I agree with the article in terms of the ridiculous media hype over the last few days, and I'm certainly not advocating king tides with shark attacks, I was wondering if anyone out there has done any research into the history of shark attacks and full moons?

I note that we've just had a full moon on Sunday just gone and 3 shark attacks on the east coast around this time.

I also note that the previous fatal shark attack on the east coast (Ballina 8 April 2008) was in fact also around a full moon. That's about the extent of my research thus far. I'm not saying that every shark attack occurs around a full moon (for instance the recent WA fatal attack was not during a full moon period), but it would certainly be interesting to know if they are more prevalent during this time.

I can remember going fishing as a kid at night on full moons and we hardly ever caught any decent fish. All we caught were what we referred to as vermon......catfish, sting rays, eels etc.....and these were certainly more prevalent around the full moon periods.

I’m not sure about the link between full moon and the occurrence of shark sightings/attacks but all I can say is that around full moon I go a little weird.

It’s almost like the bright shiny moon triggers something in my brain that makes me hostile and unpredictable.

I think that if the moon can pull a whole chunky body of water across the planet …so too can it pull all the juices in your skull to the bad side.

I'm still bemused by the Manly Daily's turn yesterday: running a giant front page pic of a massive white shark lunging open-jawed from the deep (SA or African in origin for sure; it had the markings of a shark who'd been head-butting a cage) with the headline Coming To A Beach Near You...followed inside by a very po-faced editorial about how we should not surrender to "irrational" fears about sharks!

ah well it's the Silly Season.

I was hoping it would thin the crowds a little, but judging by the circus down at Queensie by 6.30 this morning it's had zero effect.

There's many anecdotal stories circulating about full moons affecting many things:-
[*]disturbances near mental hospitals increase
[*]domestic animals are harder to lock inside at night
[*]menstrual periods are affected - any comments girls?

... I see the bad moon rising, I see that trouble's on the way.........
