Yeah I think you're in a bit of a time warp there Turtle.

Wasn't Cheyne surfing those things against the early thrusters? So you've gotta be looking at 1980/81 I'd guess.

I wasn't old enough to really know what was going on but my money is on the Lazor Zap being around in the early to mid 1980's. The irony is that the planshape was ahead of its time ( perhaps the whole board was) and the movement of volume to the tail benefitted the tr-fins immensely.

I WAS old enough to be lectured for about an hour by Geoff McCoy one afternoon at his shop at Avoca at the time. In the best spirit & full of stoke but a lecture all the same. I can still hear him saying:
" why would you put trainer wheels on a bike when you want it to lean into corners? Thats all those extra fins are, trainer wheels."

Ha, little did he know that people laughed at Horan when he turned up with a Mcoy. Its well known other surfers believed it Killed any chance of him winning a world title.

Seriously.............YES
If it is Ross Marshall he bears an uncanny resemblance to Bobby Fischer the world (chess) champ from the 1970's :o

79-84 is the Lazor Zap era.
In 1980's "Follow the Sun" Cheyne rode a 5'8" Zap at 15 foot Waimea.
Mid 70's McCoy would most likely be a double bump soft swallow single fin.
Superbly functional surfboard.
Geoff hasn't changed a bit. It's still his way or the highway.
Most functional surfboard I ever had was a 6'3" roundtail McCoy custom that went in everything from 2foot beachies to 6 foot Tombstones.
Jeremy Byles was rookie of the Year in 1991.
I want Nightclub Dwight dead in his grave I want the nice-nice up in blazes

^^interesting steve, sounds like you remember early mccoy days. i rode his boards until age 15 i think.
loved hanging out after school and listening to him(he talked a lot).
he had someone else doing the shaping with him, i just cannot remember who it was. could it have been bruce raymond??

I was living at Bondi from 81-84 when Cheyne and his brother showed up with them and as an impressionable youngster I had to have one.
My mate and I both ordered one.
The one Cheyne was riding was pretty extreme. Same with my mate's.
He actually stuck a squash ball on the end of the nose because it was so pointy.
Mine was a little fuller in the nose.
That was 1982-3.
Put the board up on a rail in a cut back and the board would often spin out.
Reality lesson of not having enough talent and equipment restrictions learnt early on.
That was before the Lexcen star fin.
Simon brought out his thruster and it was hello Energy and goodbye McCoy.
I really wish I still had both those boards. Early McCoy Zap and Energy thruster. What a pair.
Only a rat can win the rat race.

Yeh lazer zaps 80/81 same time as America cup win(remember winged keil fin)same time as thruster(Simon at big bells 81)Whole Mc Coy team jumps on em and goes backwards.I had a go of one of Larry Blairs once and was horrorfied,it would of turned on a pin head but had no forward thrust at all if the tinyest little section came down in front of you you were fcuked.(notice how all Mc Coy surfers had to adapt there styles to try and suit the board)shouldnt it be the other way round? Its a shame cause Cheyne is one of my all time heroes and I would of been stoked to see him get a world title.

I remember an article in one of the papers (SMH I'm sure) on Jeremy Oxley & the fact that schizophrenia (& alcohol) had pretty much rendered him a shell of the person he once was.

Anyway, both are on Wikipedia which claims Jeremy is running the official Sunnyboys website & in looking at that it would seem he's doing well again. Peter apparently runs a pizza joint in Newtown. It's funny but I've never thought of the Oxleys as surfers, but rather musicians. I knew they had surfed but I never realised they were good at it.
great music too, I surfed Burleigh Beachy really nice and 4ft when they were playing a concert on the beach, everyone but me and 3 mates went in to see the show and we got to surf to the Sunnyboys playing live....great stuff
