Small Wave Boards
Hey guys,
I just wanted to get your opinions on a small wave board choice.
It will be custom, and i still have to talk to mitch about the board, but i just wanted to run some ideas and get some more.
Would a fish type shape work?
Sortof full nose, quad fin but with a "modern" outline???
Like a fish that works in shitty beachies, and whatever else.
Or
Semi fish grovel shortboard:
minimal rocker
light
quad
fuller outline
etc
going with the quad for something new and like the feel of them.
the board wouldnt be for completly serious surfing, but not a stupid board either.
Maybe to ride in boardriders and when the swell is 2 foot and below.
Still able to do turns etc.
any ideas are appreciated.
i have too many and have confused myself

Re: Small Wave Boards
Others will argue, but twin keel. Glassed on fibreglass keels. Crazy wide, thickness depends on what you like. The better the surfer, the shorter the board.
And you'll find out that you can surf them in bigger than 2 foot quite easily, but dont tell your shortboard mates though. Catch heaps of waves, no monkey dance required for speed, and make the un makeable sections.
They aren't perfect, so dont expect that, just expect a high wave count, a tonne of speed, and heaps of fun and you'll be fine.
EDIT, go a quad setup if that's what you want.

Re: Small Wave Boards
I thought it through and i am edging toward a modified shortboard, for small waves.
Low rocker and concave, wider in the tail, a bit shorter.
That way i can surf it in comps and still have a ball on a board that suits the conditions.
After all, fishes are traditionally made for long waves like malibu (crescent head etc)
Thanks for the input!
Hopefully mark and NC and other shredders will have some input too

Re: Small Wave Boards
go reverse rocker....like flat as a ironing boardg_u_m_b_y wrote: Low rocker and concave, wider in the tail, a bit shorter.
square tail
and consider a flat bottom...concaves work best in good waves
other than that i think your on the right track

Two words ... Darcy ... BOMB ...
Have a look at the web site ... go to board models ... yeh thats the bomb.

My oldest son was riding the 5' 7" in 1-2 foot ... and he's 6'3" ... the board was smoking.

Re: Small Wave Boards
Hayden joistik quad diamond tail, easily the best small wave board ive ridden. Not just for when its mush either, good for sucky little waves too.
Re: Small Wave Boards
Haha recommending a Simon Anderson quad to Gumby maybe get one for his mate too.

Re: Small Wave Boards
Saw Mike Psillakis out the other day on what looked like a super-fun small-wave board for younger guys.
It was a disc-shaped thruster, 5'4" x 18.75" x 2.5", with a flat rocker.
Mike was having a ball in the soft 1-2' waves, riding this thing like it was a skateboard.
If I was 10 years younger I'd get one myself.

Re: Small Wave Boards
Yeah gumby I'd be tempted by something like the above...very short, rounded off discy sorta thing, wide point slightly forward of centre, pretty flattened rocker, light double concave, simple three fin setup. A quick paddler in bursts, skatey etc, small enough so you can control and dominate pretty much the entire thing from a single spot.
It's fun when a little-wave board turns vertical just like THAT in tiny yet hollowish rip bowl type waves! A roundish outline and three fin setup gives you that, the flatter rocker lets you skim and plane, and the shortness (5'2"?) lets you feel every fraction of the board from one stance.

Re: Small Wave Boards
Those round nose disc type boards are fun I have a biscuit but if you surf them too much they ruin you for when you jump back on your regular shorty.
I am searching for an alternative this summer and so far have tried the
JS Sonic
JS Nitro (which i thought would be good but wasn't)
Simon Mollusc
Biscuit
Haven't quite found what I want and am thinking fishes are a hoax unless you ride them all the time, even the very good surfers I know have trouble transitioning (even Rasta has said this) so be wary Gumby, one comprimises the other

They look nice... my brother in law just picked one up and loves it (in fact, he from down the gong... wonder if it was him you saw... which beach, and was the guy goofy?). He's at me to try the thing out, just gotta get over my dodgy ankle :?iggy wrote: not sure if you've checked out Al Merrick's biscuit model, but here it is...

i've seen them in shops a few times and picked 'em up and eyeballed 'em over and they look great...
have also seen a guy down in the gong about 6 weeks ago shredding up 2 foot bowley a-frames on one...

for those that own one, have ridden one or know someone that has, how short do you recommend going?

Pretty damm funny to see America's sultan of soul, towsurfing a retro board into a crowded Bali line-up.iggy wrote: video of Rob Machado riding the Biscuit...

I guess paddling into 4 foot surf has become too much like hard work for the fro.
Wonder if he'll eventually get a portable iron lung because breathing is just too mainstream.
