Travel camera - SE Asia

Post by Chrisp » Sun Dec 14, 2008 6:10 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm headed over to Hong Kong, Singapore & as much of SE Asia as I can see in the next 5 months. Seeing as I just dropped my camera today (which was new.........spewing) I need a new one, what's the verdict? Should I get an SLR? Something basic & small? or something in between, mainly interested in some zoom. (my budget probably wouldn't stretch to an SLR......)

I'll be staying in Singapore for 4 months & then doing the rest, probably all the travel will be by myself & slumming a little once I've left Singapore.

Any travel tips or must see's are welcome too.
Cheers,
Chris

You would have to learn how to use the slr, but lenses etc. Get one of those SLR meets point and shoot camera's.

Don just testing a post here! Canon G10 is a very nice piece of kit by the way. If I was going to get a new point and shoot, it'd be that one.

I have had a Fuji S5800 for the last year and can't fault it as a point and shoot. Pics are fine. There's a new model out now which is 10mp (instead of 8 ) around $300+
10 X optical zoom and 5 X digital zoom + 50X. You need a tripod at this zoom level though.

If i was buying a digital to travel with it would be the g10. Full manual control plus aperture and shutter priority means you have the control of an slr and its small too!

i went to try and check the cannon g10, ( sold out of stock) i guess what i am looking for would be the basic cannon digi body so i can put my old 35mm lenses on.my old camera is a canon eos 3000 not digi i have a 75-300 mm lens , 28-80mm lens . any help would be greatly appreciated...i am the total punter reguarding this stuff but have managed to take some good photos. the guy in the shop said that all lenses after 1988 fit all new canon bodies. then he started showing me stuff worth $1100 and $1300 ... i was a bit stunned as this set up i have now cost about $800 seven yrs ago.... :o

boardscape, basically all EOS dig cameras will take lenses with an EF mount and the newer ones EF and EFS. This is just the mount point of the lens and some makes have their own while others make lenses for various mounts. Your 70-300 and 28-80 will work just fine, but because the CCD sensor on most dig bodies arent 35mm equivelant size, for most bodies you multiply the original focal length of the lens by 1.6 and you'll get the actual focal length on your camera.... 120-480 and 45-128. So relatively long lenses.
I have an old 75-300 canon probably very similar to yours, and it works fine, but the optics are cheap and it's not a solid build, and not fast at all. But you wont pay any less than $1500 for a GOOD lens.
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ is a very good site (for canon lenses) that can be quite educational.

Thought about second hand?
Canon 350d or 400d - I see them around for under $500.
If you want new, try the canon 1000d
-these guy have some good grey import deals
http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/canoneos1000d.htm
Then you can use your existing lenses
How bout picking something up in Honkers?

2 lenses, SLR, batteries etc is a fair bit to carry around.
The G10 is meant to be great, but maybe a bit of overkill.
Thought about a waterproof camera like this?

I've mangled a couple of cameras with sand and rough treatment - this should be up to it.

Bought a Sony DSC-H3 8.1 mega pixel with 10X optical zoom,14m flash which is a brilliant camera.
Chose it because it has a compact size, big zoom and a powerful flash.
More compact than the other super zooms.
Takes great photos and has excellent battery life and a 2.5" LCD screen.
You can record video (of course) and there's no limit on time just up to your memory cards capacity.
I bought mine with a spare battery and a 2Gb memory card.
The second battery is a must for travelling.
Spent 11 years as an adventure tour guide in South East Asia and this is my pick for a great compact camera with a big zoom.
Beware of Olympus Muji's.
I have two with broken battery clips which are over $100 to fix their crappy little clips.

As long as the mount is right, they'll work regardless whether it was for a film camera or not. !00% sure. An FD mount wont work, and the converters are almost impossible to get.

Go for a G9, superseeded model so you can save a bit, and probably not a huge difference to the G10. For travel I want something light and compact, something I can put in my pocket when not taking pics, and the quality is pretty good at 80 to 400 ISO. Not as good image wise as a semi pro camera like a Nikon D700, but a fraction of the cost and weight, good to walk around the streets with and won't get in the way. My 2 cents worth.

Maybe going off on a slight tangent, but here is a photographer (magnum) pushing the limits of what is possible to shoot with a compact camera, which can be relevant to "travel" type photography, ie people, places, street scenes etc. Taking surf shots from shore would be a different matter though.

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_ ... -6468-7844

G9 takes raw. The G10 has a slightly wider lens, 28mm compared to a 35mm, higher pixels, and a slightly different layout.

BTW, in Hong Kong they have "dealer stock" of G10 for HK$3680 or AUD680 with today's exchange. (no card but cards are very cheap)
