Forgotten Board Brands - Downunder Surfboards

Post by miami13 » Mon Nov 10, 2008 10:22 pm

Does anybody know what ever happended to Downunder surfboards?

I only ask as a kid i had one and they were really popular but until yesterday i have not seen one in decades. Just got me thinking about board brands that no longer exist. Feel free to add to Downunder as a brand that no longer exists.

There's probably many more brands which have been and gone, than there are in existence today.
The Joe Larkin label seems to have long gone, although I believe he makes some classic timber boards somewhere.
And Merrin Surfboards (also at Kirra in the 60's). Made by Graeme Merrin who also made Merrin Surf Wax.
From Currumbin, Mick Carey Surfboards. Mick ended up on the Gold Coast City Council which distinguished itself by being sacked by the State Government.
Does Kirra Surf still exist? The last time I went through there, high rise units were being built on the site. As I understand Peter Turner owned the site, he's probably done pretty well for himself and earned it.

ps. Where were Downunder based?

Hey fong, check out this Jet. I still bring it out a few times a year for a turn too... Check the V in the tail, it's like riding an old skatey with the trucks loosened right off...

Tony cerff shapes great boards, though that does look like it'd go a bit like a figure skate.

Living Water - Nick Maz

Zappa - Dominic

Christie - Chook Chilcott

Yep, my first board was an Emerald. I was gonna show it again but last time I brought out that photo someone (Munch if I remember rightly) said he thought it looked like a surf-ski.

Tarnishing my fond memories of the thing.

And would you believe that Emerald Surfoards are now Emerald Bodyboard Shop?!

Couple more additions...

Water Force
Blue Hawaii
Pacific Dreams (?)
G&S (at least in Oz)
McGrigor
KC

Sky twinnies. A mate of mine had one and we all wanted one. Local Knowledge was up around Byron as well. I actually had a Daniells board from Peter Daniels at St Ives. Flyer pin single fin which was my fav board at 17.

My first board was a Peter Daniels swallow tail - a hand me down from my older bro. Good board.

My first custom was a Phil Myers Free Flight from Wicks (if I found my "wicks silver saver card", do you reckon the'd honour the discount?)

Freeflight boards are being brought back by Shotgun up here in Noosa. Phil Myers is involved which makes them pretty legit. They also shape G&S boards under licence.
