Here are a few examples from this website that typify why as a race we need to control the gene pool ...

scsurf Posted: Fri Sep 05, 2008 4:15 pm Post subject: Who's wave is it?
If surfer 1 is in priority position say on a shortboard (sounds biased already eh?) and surfer 2 is sitting outside say on a longboard.
Both are going for the same wave, now surfer 2 pops up first and is riding (being that he has that advantage) then surfer 1 drops in still in position behind surfer 2, "who's wave is it?"
I vote for surfer 1. am I wrong?
A: impossible to calculate without the use of a slide-rule and a protractor ... :?
vanfossenator Posted: Mon Oct 13, 2008 1:31 am Post subject: Help a newb stop wiping out!!!!
I am a beginner, and I have obviously mastered the paddle for the most part and I am now beginning to popup and ride some waves. I have noticed that sometimes when I catch a wave the nose of my longboard drops off the front of the wave and I go head first over the front of the wave. I have been positioning myself farther back on the board and that still does not seem to correct the problem. I feel like I am too far out on the wave when it breaks. What can I do to correct this???
A: cover yourself in fish guts and blood before your next surf ...

p.s ditch the mal....trade it in on a old 6'6
u will thank me in time for this critical bit advice
Not sure I agree with this advice... I reckon when you learn on a big board, because it's more stable and easier to get up on, you gain confidence quicker, get the feeling of trim/flow and generate more 'stoke' as a result. Spending too much time on a shorter board can get frustrating when you haven't got the fundamentals down... I learnt on a board that was way to short (wouldn't even surf on it now) and it was so tempting to give it all in (needless to say I'm glad i perservered).
Building confindence in your ability is really important when you are learning anything new. When you want to come down in length after mastering the big board, you'll have more confidence because you'll find the board easier to handle in general (ie. duckdives etc)...although you will find paddling a little more difficult.
By the way, 8'6" is not too big in learning' conditions. Don't let the short boards that everyone else is riding make you feel any less of a man. Everyone on here that actually surfs has gone through what you are experiencing now

Well, I've been following these chats for a few months now, so thought I'd risk the welcoming committee and get onboard.
