Summer shapes ???

Post by pridmore » Tue Oct 07, 2008 10:25 pm

who is getting a new board for Spring or Summer ? seems like the most popular time for a new board is when the bad waves are about to begin...keen to hear what shapes people are going for and why ???

i got me an al merrick pod. why? 'cos my mate got one and i tried it and it felt good.

but the one i've got doesn't feel so good. it skips and slides and hasn't got any bite and i can't fcking ride it. i should have seen it coming but board shopping is akin to watching pornography for me.

as soon as i walk into a board shop i'm overwhelmed by fantasy and desire and can see myself performing clear and precise acts of obscenity on a perfect pouting wave that exists only as a canvas for my lurid ego.

in that moment, like any good onanist, i'm utterly gone. no self-awareness at all. any hint of reality would ruin it. i am in a JG Ballardesque eroto-consumer-fibreglass trance that will not end until climax is reached.

so i pay and leave with my baby and by the time i get home i'm hating myself and hating all boards and hating surfing for making me do it.

is that the kind of answer you were looking for?

dont hate surfboards , dont hate surfing and definitely dont hate porn, 3 very beautiful things.....I can understand where you are coming from but wondering why the pods not working for you now ? is it the same as your mates ? Is it a board that by adjusting your surfing, it will become fun or is it just not workin for you at all ? mate ,if buying and riding different surfboards is your only problem, than you are a lucky man, my problem is I love making them and theres no money in it...thats the problem, now wheres that porn ????

i had a really good post share....but now...i just feel so dirty

and abused

bastard shapers...turning us into sluts  :x

p.s

Model: The Mollusc

A hybrid with all the performance aspects of a shortboard. A fuller nose combined with a Deep-to-Shallow Concave (DSC) produces a board that catches waves easily but still surfs with speed & responsiveness. The ‘07 Mollusc comes in both a swallow & round tail.

pps...i'm hoping summer will bring cyclones and good waves

or i'll cut my wrists....both sound fun

re: the pod.

i dunno. my mates board was tiny - 5'6 - 'cos he has the physique of a (hairy) 12 year old girl. i'm bigger and slower and my 5'10 pod is fine size wise.

it just feels very weird. not like any fish i've ridden. it does some good things. but every time i lean on a rail it just sinks under me or spins out.

maybe i'm just going thru an extra heavy footed phase.

or, i'm just stuck in my ways. another man's surfboard can seem bewildering and repulsive the same way another man's pornography is.

pridmore, I want a board that handles like a normal shortboard, I can duckdive it, turn well etc, but it is really easy to get onto smaller (gutless)waves.

Something to make 1-3 foot onshore waves fun!

can I ask why philw ? is it the size or the colour or design ??? I personally like the planshape but unsure of the channells for a summer board, channells for me perform best in clean and quality waves and kind of contradict other parts of the design...The extra area is for better planing in weaker waves and the flatter rocker, again for speed in slower, smaller ,weaker waves so I am guessing the board is designed for those conditions ??? board looks really nice, just not sold on the channells for waves its meant to be used in .... anyone agree or disagree ??? I love channells in the right waves and rode them almost exclusively for years, had a few AB's and others...

I've been riding this board in small to medium conditions and really enjoying it:

I bought this board about 15 years ago in Hawaii for Mrs Bookster, and it hasn't had much use in the meantime :P I posted on here in this thread asking for input as what the board might be suitable for. Some good feedback on there, coupled with showing some mates a bit more design savy than myself saw me dust it off and start to ride it recently.

The verdict? Fun, and the volume up front is good for those high tide surfs when things are full and slow, not to mention my less than stellar fitness at the moment. It still seems ok on steeper waves as well, but a dredging reef would probably not be good for it....

If I was looking to get a new board for smaller stuff, I would certainly like something similar to this oldie.

Im not sold on the channels either for that board. But I would be happy to be proven wrong as it could work.

Im also not sold on the fin set up but thats probably another topic.

At least its got a round tail as round tails or diamonds seem to be the best tail set ups for a quad.

Guard out of interest have you surfed One Palm before?

i don't like the look of it 'cos there's too much stuff going on.

it's like one of those weird fish from millions of years ago with a jaw full of rotating teeth and eyes on it's tongue.

extinct for a reason.

having said that i do like the plan shape. and i like the look of the sa mollusc too. btw - pridmore - i also liked the look of a fart bat (?) pic you posted up - one with black rails i think.

I suffer from a board-buying affliction as well.

Just ordered an All Merrick Fishcuit from Onboard in Mona Vale - http://www.cisurfboards.com/sb_fishcuit.asp. It looks like a beauty but is pretty pricey so I hope it goes well.

Dino,

Nice boards, very nice boards. Like the differences between them. Would be a lot of fun trying them both out in different waves and finding out which worked best where.

Getting two new customs at once is probably the only thing more exciting then getting one new custom.

They should be enough to ensure no swell wherever you are for about 6 months.

Iggy, got lucky over the school hols and enjoyed a few good goes on a Pridmore slim bat. Know what you mean about getting your head around quads. Enjoyed it immensely but after having got a few I'm even more confused about what's happening. After 16 years of surfing I have decided that I have almost no idea what's going on.

Not that that worries me. 8)

Couldnt agree more about the round tail. I only have quads now and have bat tails, swallows and round/rounded pin tails. When quad burst back on the scene everyone was saying round/rounded pins wouldnt work. Well , I reckon they are the best tail for a quad bar none. Quads arent for everyone, but for me, I will never go back. Just like them that much.

well that would be your first mistake wouldn't it :?:

cause it looks frocking siiiiicvkkkkkkk :!:

must been for a pro....cause they ( on majority) prefer glassin fins

for good reason...but want hijack thread

great see you got a quad dino....your bit like me....only not as attractive

it's a amazing feeling the lost drag from the third fin and extra speed

i've only had two boards from luke....1st in desprete - out the shop ( had snapped board)....and second cause i couldn't find a dahlberg suit ( HIS A LAZY C.NUT WHEN HE WANTS B) and the lsd had the right sizes, and the 1st one i'd got from him had been such a good , reliable board. ( his glass jobs are ok!)

both boards worked...and worked well

good luck with dino
you'll have fun finding their short comings as well their supioriotys

if only you could do something for your social skills

than u have a complete quiver

p.s u got army grubs killing the grass in that last shot...left corner...get onto them quickly

p.p.s shit YOUR LAWNS SOOOO BAD IT MAKES THE CONCRETE IN 1ST SHOT LOOK GOOD
