Peter Troy R.I.P.

Matt Griggs authored a book called "Surfers" a few years ago. Out of all the biographies featured in that book (Slater, Rasta, Jon Frank, Rabbit, Layne etc.), Peter Troy's amazing story stood out the most. Definitely worth a read if you can get a hold of it.

Best wishes to all family and friends.
Funny how as a grommet you take so much for granted. I remember rockin' into Pete's shop at M'ba for a quick purchase of some wax etc and getting "stuck" with one of his long stories. Don't get me wrong even back then most of the stories were mesmerising and some just laugh out loud funny..even three days later at school!!
But geez I'd give my left nut now to hear them again with more appreciative ears.

It's hard to imagine another surf pioneer making the same impact as Peter Troy. That image that 2ndReef posted up is amazing... quite beautiful too.

Has he got an autobiography? That run connecting South America and Norway looks very interesting.

Peter was a classic , so many tales and when I used to hang at his Mooloolaba shop 'Surf Ratz', we doubted alot of what he told us but as I got older and read of his tales and heard of his reputation, I realized how priviledged I was to get to hear so many stories from Peter. He used to tell us about ping pong balls and cigarette smoking beavers in Thailand and at 13 years old it was quite an education... He could see us in the surf at Deadmans from his shop and always tell us what we could do better. He had a lease on Old Woman for a while there back in the late 80's ,early 90's ....R.I.P Peter, a real surf pioneer that I was lucky enough to know for a while....

Do you think that's his real signature? Or is it painted by the artist that put the map together... without sounding like an 'art ***', I think it's so suited to him because you can see a bit of an 'asian' brushstroke in it as well as a western script style... a universal reflection of the cultures that he spent so much time discovering...

you gotta check that "Surfers" book by Matt Griggs. He tells the whole story to Matt Griggs in the most matter-of-fact manner like it was nothing. Easily my highlight of the book. Worth the trip to your local bookstore or library just to read his chapter...

Pete made that map himself. It's pretty classic to view in real life ... if only to realise just how much of the world still remained to be seen by him.

The big thing you always carried away from a conversation with Mr Troy was the sense that the world was worth your effort.

That's quite profound. I'm sure a global local like himself would have had an interesting view of what "localism" was all about...

Kind of just made the assumption, RB+

Nick has answered the map element... but no I didn’t take it to be a signature as such, just a stylised way of rendering your name if that makes sense, always going to be different throwing around a brush. Like the style.

Peter had a really great farewell!
