20 Best rides

Post by channels » Fri Sep 19, 2008 8:25 am

Just found a link to a site documenting the 20 best rides of all time. I'd heard of many of these but only ever seen a few of them on vid.

http://www.surfline.com/20/September/v0 ... ture09.swf

Enjoy!

^^^ Mate that used to work at Billabong has a wallsized poster of that in his living room. The photo's taken right at the moment AI's board slips a bit sideways, just before his fins bit in. Incredible photo.

But for mine it's gotta be #17, Garrett McNamara getting a haircut by the lip at Jaws. It's a 60 foot wave yet he was just centimetres from obliteration.

Nice words too NC, gave me a few goosebumps while reading it. I'd be interested to see what waves made the short list. Brocks ill-fated drop at the 1990 Eddie? Surely that was the biggest wave attempted.

The majestic Tom Curren.
The style master.
watched the replay at least half a dozen times

I'll have the conditions in Jarrah Tutton's segment please.

Better than three barrels on one wave and only having to just stand there?

i vote shaun and mr's shared wave at off the wall as no 1

i find lists like that pretty stupid anyhow

rather than " the best rides of all time"

there more , the easiest doccumented

Maybe read the intro, which defines it a bit.

A great ride changes the surf experience for more than the rider. It can't be one of the greats if there's no witnesses.

Think you're underrating the Jarrah Tutton wave btw.

ok..yes...i was frothing over the footage....negelated the writting

and i do agree with the  great rides are spread by word mouth far and wide

i still remeber people frothing over some wave curren caught in indo mid 90's on a little fish :?

never saw any footage....but i still think it gave the fish movement a kick along

Here are a few top 20.

And I remember this wave some stand up dude got. He had a beard and he was out Pipe, straight leged G-turn around a huge section, perfectly comfortable. Mad dog or someone??? Help us out and post the pic.

There are a few more bodyboarding milestone bombs as well. Tim Jones Wiamea Shorey '93, "Mikes Cavern", Tamega "death roll" out giant pipe in the '94 pipe comp etc..

Here's a few of my favourites
Randall Paulson - Pipe 2005

This Mark Matthews one is pretty nuts...

And a nice boogie board one during the pipe comp in 2007 (love the bottom turn to set it up)....

Hard to beat the Laird wave though....

PS Coops - crazy shot of Rawlins - is there a sequence you could post?

PPS Not an individual wave, but this clip from my eyes won't dry is worth a look...http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSgUPKNG2 ... re=related

Here's one that I never get sick of watching..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbV546QZKoE

Look at Timmy Curran's last wave that starts at 1:10, he picks off a bomb, draws out a bottom turn, sets up the barrel and just stands there

Love it!

^^^coops's post shows the real weakness of "top-20" lists -- they get dusted by what happens next.

Been a few rides in the past three years that'd take out spots in the top 20 today.

I've got a couple:

- Occy's sould arch at Pipe in the 84 (?) Masters
- Thronton Fallander's Stormrider Barrel and cutty at Nias
and just about every wave at Mexico Search event

Nick do you know the stand up one im talking about? Late 80's - early 90's Pipe. The guy has longish sandy-blond hair. Pair of shorts. He is standing tall bottom turning around a huge section at Pipe. It is etched in my mind.
