Padang shipwreck

Not my idea, but I thought I'd try and give it a kick along. As this piece of crud continues to foul up one of the best wavezones in the world, just before Rip Curl runs the Search CT there, and as the Indonesians foul up their attempts to pull the boat off the reef, why doesn't Rip Curl sieze the moment and fund and organise the salvage op themselves? Wouldn't that be a major marketing coup? How about it, Claw?

What a great idea!

Seriously.

Pass it on to Neil Ridgway or Gary Dunne. I'd love to hear their response.

Or if they don't remove it how about using it as the judges tower for the comp?

that is not coming off the reef if they had of attempted a rescue befoe last friday but now since it has been pushed inside and pounded up against a big rock on the inside i doubt that the boat is gonna come out as a whole

clearly, this is not an isolated event but a portent of impending doom! the rip curl pro must be cancelled if catastrophe is to be averted and all current and former wct-ers with the exception of kelly slater are not to be wiped out!!

alternatively, the wreck may be interpreted as a sign that it is time for us surfers to stop killing and eating fish, our scaly, cold-blooded brothers and finned and oviparous friends, who love to play in waves as much as any man!

With Kelly in his current form, it'd be no surprise if he did an air over it in the final, "because it was there". It's only 20ft high... (or should i halve it to 10ft as it is in the surf zone?)

I thought they were going to pull it last friday on high tide? What happened? Did they try and fail or not even try at all.

from baliwaves.com
Especially the 2 from Padang Padang and you’ll get to see the fishing boat that ran aground. Also the latest news from Padang Padang is that the boat has turned side on the the waves.

more on this:
Padang Padang, if your interested in the reefed boat down there check our Readers Report page for photos of the stricken vessel or check the latest video clips in our Revver Video Section. I’ve been reading all sorts of assumptions on the web about this situation. Yes it is a serious situation with damage to the reef and marine envoirnment from fuel and oil leakage. But there is a Team here in Bali trying to control the situation and Coke Cola has also decided to lend a helping hand by donating US$5,000.00 to the cause to help with on going damage control. A lot of surfers only seem concerned about the actual wave, but where the boat is now (Readers Report photos) there is no real threat to the wave itself. The Real Padang Padang is a Low Tide wave so backwash is not an issue.

This is what Rip Curl are doing , email sent to me today from mates in Bali :

Hi team,

Well the latest indo debacle is the boat that has been run up on the reef at padang.

The Ripcurl cup is on standby waiting for swell and this 150 foot longliner is wedgied
right on the take-off spot.
Ripcurl are doing nothing about it,apparently their lawyers are concerned about 3rd
party repercussions.
However, they are sending out sms messages to everyone and asking for donations.
I find this kind of hypocritical as they wont use their own money because of some
legal aspect but will fund a salvage operation with other peoples money

Another party made an attempt today to pull it off the reef in co-operation with the
local police but the money that was allocated for the tug boat mysteriously went missing.
The operation did proceed but with 6 Jimbaran fishing boats used as the 'muscle' in an
attempt to dislodge the boat from the reef.
As you can imagine they made a show of it but didnt budge the longliner.

There is an oil slick now spread from impossibles and then all the way to the racetrack at Ulus.
The swell is increasing as I write this and is predicted to steadily rise peaking on monday
arvo at 3.2 metres.
The window to get this boat off the reef is rapidly closing.
The general consensus is that this bad boy is going to get smashed all over padang.
