right on. thanks.

the lifeguards at the bay were calling 25 + that morning when the closeout sets went thru...but a lot of the pics are from after that as it dropped.

It looks a lot smaller than 25', more like 15' hawaiian...

Then again, sometimes I wonder what all these crazy big tow-in waves have done to my ability to judge wave-height visually? I mean only 10 years ago Waimea was still a premier big-wave location, now you rarely hear it mentioned... Certainly not in the same sentence as Jaws or Cortes.

Obviously Waimea isn't any smaller than it used to be, but it just doesn't look as big as it used to in photos (not just the photos from the above link, but Waimea photos in general)!

wave size

Post by vb » Wed Jan 28, 2004 2:42 pm

One thing I think tow-in has done has resulted in a more realistic assessment of wave size ... I don't know how macho it is to call double overhead five feet, guess it depends if you call it from the water or the beach. But with the big prizes on offer for the year's biggest wave (obviously towed-in), they seem to be calling what would once be "35ft plus" in terms of 66ft, 7 and a half inches.

Ultimately setting a size to a wave means nothing, the real question is are you going out?
