Nice one. I also enjoy sitting at the line-up and looking at the miniature cars and buses racing away to the city and back. It's very pacifying to know all those stressed out, worried people are going about their business while I wait for the next good wave.mustkillmulloway wrote:i'm full pity in the surf....everysurf....i look back 2 the land and watch the rat race, ant castles....and i feel pity for there wasted lifes...full of building careers and money in the bank...
Funny, I was thinking this same thing on the weekend surfing small angourie. Quite a few (including me) ended up on the rocks, but it only brought mirth.
I don't think there is any pity for other surfers who get smashed, break boards etc as we are all out there and know the risks - and know it could be us on the next wave.

Well, I have been feeling that No there is no pity in the surf - until yesterday. An older gent struggling on a longboard drops in on me, bringing down the section, stuffing me in the whitewater. On the paddle out I mention a few details about his mother, his wife, his brain, his beer gut in a clear voice.
He sits up and apologizes "without reservation". I tell 'im we're not at a restaurant and there's no reservations out here. He persists with effusive pardons, how he's trying to get back into it, how unfit he's become...
He's a hopeless case - the board is old and soggy, covered with patches of house paint. He looks exhausted and slightly scared. He even starts to mention "... I'm not working as much ... so I have more time..." He needs pity; he wants pity. This is a luxury I don't think we should have - but there it is - creeping up on ya. And now I start to feel pity for meself - going soft! Pitiful.

nope not a democracy, more like some sort of darwin-istic anarchy...ric_vidal wrote:Isn’t it?WANDERER wrote:a favourite saying I've adopted:

Think you might find the ‘majority rule’ rule, but now you’re suggesting not as a rule.
I rule and I drool.
Have you had your pills this morning, to alleviate the drool crush the pills up into your gruel.

Well the surf certainly doesn't pity us.
Took an absolute thrashing this morning. Low tide, only about 4 foot, mostly closing out but a few makeable sandy barrels.
Took 3 sets on the head and came up seeing those nice flourescent orange donuts that tell me my my brain is starved of oxygen. My arms wouldn't work any more.
When I got out I do believe I felt the ocean laughing at me....
Man it felt good!!!

Re: Is there pity in the surf?
Schadenfreude - satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else's misfortune - appears to be the prevailing sentiment on these forums. The ugly spectacle of surfing crowded beach breaks, the sport that devours its weak and old, where abuse is perpetuated from generation to generation.AlbyAl wrote:Is there pity in the surf?
