Yep for a while it had some bad shit happening due to the illusion of isolation.iggy wrote:re: Kingcliffe..
remember about 15 years ago there was a bush track you could drive your car down that'd take you a fair way down towards Fingal...
the banks were a lot punchier down there...
sucked when they closed it off
also, wasn't there supposed to have been some sort of slasher/strangler type murders down that stretch back in the 70's or 80's??
remember hearing of it??
Some psycho army guys tortured a kid there. There was the balaclava rapist who terrorised the area plus random craziness that happens in small coastal towns. Its not all Sea Change with chuckling quirky characters.

I was puzzled by that as well. As a life-long resident of the Peninsula ( I was born and lived the first 20 years of my life in Frankston - good breeding though plus 12 in Mornington itself) the stretch from pretty much Pt Leo in Westernport right down and around the coast to Portsea has that much variety it's not funny.Ringmaster wrote:I was actually thinking that myselfiggy wrote:are you out of your mind??tomtom wrote:Most of my life - NSW - Bellambi

Wish I was back home
that stretch cops heaps of swell with loads of good waves...
you'd rather surf bellambi over gunnamatta???
Makes you wonder what his favourite type of waves are
Obviously not punchy beachbreaks which rarely get below 2 - 3 feet and quite often deal out waves you'd trade your right nut for..................
(Unless by Mornington Peninsula he mean't Frankston Haven for bottom of the gene pool if ever there was one)
I surf Gunnamatta all the time (just did on Sunday and it was a nice 2 -3 ft) and that place is pretty damn good. You need balls of steel to surf it when it is big though as the rips and the power in the waves are crazy. I avoid it when it gets to 6 ft as by then Flinders is pumping with big long lazy left handers on a SW swell.

Check out Phillip Island, not Woolamai but some other locations, I've heard you can get some decent shallow reef breaks and barrels that are pretty much boog only unless as a surfer you fancy breaking your neck!
Flinders is pretty much surfer only, Pt Leo can get some decent shories on a big day as well.
Gunnamatta is still the best ocean break along the Mornington Peninsula and *ahem* Surf Coast (east of Cape Otway not west) in my opinion. Always has waves and always sorts the ego's out. On Sunday there were that many banks working you could have had your pick. Rye isn't bad either on a good day, less options but many reckon it has a better wave.

Yeah the East Coast stretch from Gunnamatta to Portsea actually faces the SW swell and gets the full force of the Southern Ocean, unlike Torquay/Lorne/Bells/Winki etc.... You've got to keep heading west along the Great Ocean road to places like Johanna to get a good powerful wave.iggy wrote:Phillip Island and The Mornington Penninsula always seemed to get a lot more swell than the west coast a lot more often...
P.I is awesome...
Rye is a good wave, but more of an almond shaped peak from memory, whereas Gunna was more of a grinding wave, and better as well...
Rye is a bit more limited. Normally there is a break to the right and the left of the carpark, good waves, but normally not as good as Gunna and the rocks can be a pain.
Why Gunna is so powerful compared to Rye I don't know (thermalben??) but I think it may have to do with the fact that Gunnamatta has less obstructions for the swell to get through??? I'm no expert here.
legs twinged just thinking about them... what is there? 900 odd at about a 45deg grade.scroopulis wrote:Good ol' Sandpatch eh Mozzie? Hows those bloody stairs........mozzquito wrote:wa

haven't had much cause to climb them of late - been a shocking stretch of sou-easterlies over summer... improved of late but not when I am home it seems!
VIC - caves, twin reefs or eagles
Just remember there are no good waves past the roundabout onto phillip island..
Tomtom, if you can be bothered driving a bit go and check out around cape conran. drive to the camping area and search from there.
Especially with this 9ft swell predicted for sat on the east coast.
should be some good waves getting into there.
