These current couple of swells have been more ridiculous than i think ive ever seen.
Although it all depends on peoples skill level, could be 50 out but only a handful getting the waves.

I like the bloke's attitude in shot #2 - taking care of a drop in by removing his surfboard

Remember though that's how it was done - guys sharing waves and seemingly no regard for dropping in. Unless I'm mistaken I'd assume the whole concept hadn't really come about yet. I'm sure we've all seen the footage of huge Makaha and Wiamea with 3, 4 or even 5 guys taking off on each wave, gettin' in each other's way.

No legropes either and plenty of swimming to shore!!!
So maybe the crowd was just circulating.

its always just a few guys getting the bulk of the waves, whether its 10 or 50 out there. The crowd and drop-ins are not worth it, i treat the point like a leper, by staying the Fu@k away

The drop ins get me, have no trouble getting the waves, but eventually people get the shits of getting none, sit on the other side of that section after 1st rock (i dont know all the names
) and just go wether your making it or not.

If you have been surfing there all your life, you only have to wait inline with the other locals. People get in the way though and sit infront of suck up or on top of it. They think its like a beachy.

I was Daddy's fastest tadpole about the time of these photos.
My grommethood was filled with magazine pictures of 5 abreast Waimea takeoffs. I know it hasn't at Queensland points, but when did "don't drop in" take over for most of the surf world?

^^ Good question.
I've got a vague recollection of there being something in Nat Young's History of Australian Surfing about it. Someone who trumpeted the 'one man, one wave' ethos. Buggered if I can remember who it was though.
As for when it happened I would say around the mid-60's when hotdogging was becoming popular. Surfing was moving beyond the simple thrill of natural propulsion and into self-expression. There's no room for two (or three or four) surfers on a wave when you are performing.
Might be wrong though. Be good to hear what some of the older fellas say.
