Re: Chinese whispers
hmmm... not really seeing any hard evidence there I'm afraid . The only thing concrete there is the simple fact that they ( the Chinese manufacturers ) will be outta there the very nanosecond it ceases to be lucrative. Can anyone vouch for these "warehouses full of surfboards"? If this is true, then surely there must be one or two of them in Aus?bombora wrote:Interesting stuff over at Surfermag.com about the Chinese surfboard industry for those interested. Immediate post WW2 Japanese-made goods were cheap and inferior.
Then the Japanese economy developed to the stage where for example in the 1990's a Honda NSX cost $245k. And that from a firm that started off as a pissy little motorbike manufacturer.
No doubt Chinese-made goods will go the same way as workers earn more and its middle class consumer numbers expand. .... and then a Mercedes brand equivalent in surfboards will cost less than what was a former Chinese sweat-shop popout brand.

You are bang on the mark Chrisb. I work with a lot of Aussie manufacturers and so much kit is being produced in China. The big change to the goods coming out of China nowadays is that (and some will hate this fact), the goods are pretty good and getting better.chrisb wrote:Immediate post WW2 Japanese-made goods were cheap and inferior.

When it comes to boards though, as surfers, it is our choice to buy local and it is our choice to recommend local brands and shapers etc to friends and novices that we can influence. That's my 75.3 cents on it...
