well yeah maybe it's easier to get eaten by a shark if you want to be eaten... lameLairdy wrote:

in a similar vain, if you were to walk out into the middle of a feild during a thunderstorm in bare feet holding a large metal pole, your chances of getting struck by lighting would increase greatly.
This proves nothing, other than if u want something to occur, there are many variables that you can change in order to increase you chances of them eventuating

I've been spearfishing off the bower just out from the spot where theres always backwash and its definitely the kind of place that you would expect to see sharks. It drops to about 20m deep just off where the wave breaks in front of the rocks and then rebounds.
The only thing is, that its frequented by people spearfishing almost every weekend and lesser so through the week, and I never ever hear of any shark reportings.
I've been out there with fish burleyed up and everything, and not a single shark.
Its extremely rare to see a large shark like a tiger or white pointer during daylight hours, as they're usually way way out in the deep sea in those times. Even at dawn and dusk the chance is very slim. The only sharks you will get in abundance near surfing locations are bronze whalers and bullsharks. Bronzies aren't anything to be worried about, people spearfish with them all the time. Bullsharks are a little different, but still not as bad as people make them out to be (e.g. have a look at this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vByE33GAA58 )

sorry shark lovers but I hate 'em and all this hype is giving me the willies on a murkey overcast morning with bait fish jumping around me .... maybe I'll change my mind about surfing in a crowd ...
must say though that after over 30 years I have never actually seen a shark in the surf in Australia (have elsewhere) and hope I never do ....
