got forwarded this message from a friend
"Thanks for your email. Yep, it is quite a photo. It was apparently taken off
Booti Booti (just south of Forster) a couple of weeks ago. It has caused
much discussion in the office here.
Firstly, you have to be suspicious of all amazing photos these days - given
what can be done with Photoshop etc. We have blown this up and are pretty
sure it is legitimate. Secondly, we then wanted, of course, to establish
what it was. Someone even suggested it could be one of those dense schools
of baitfish; but it would be too hard to believe that they could
coincidentally form a school in that shape. Given its size (using the surfer
as a guide, it must be at least 5-6 metres long), large pectoral fins and
tail 'scutes' on the body just in front of the tail tapering off quickly to
the tail, it really can only be a Great White. Note the flash of white near
the left pectoral fin.
We occasionally get such photos, but don't have any other good shark photos
at the moment that I could send you.
Obviously this one didn't bite, otherwise we would have heard about it. When
you go surfing, console yourself with the fact that you are accepting a
thousands of times greater risk of death every time you get in the car!
Thanks for supporting the site.
Cheers,
